To complete the process, students will submit a thoughtful reflection, minimum of 5 pages and according to course policies, at the end of the semester (see Course Schedule for due date). Students are to share information and insights gained from observation experience, including interview with site supervisor,in relation to course material and his/her growing understanding of the professional field of human services.


Jacobson/ Spring 2017 IHS 08-204 Field Experience + Reflection In an effort to promote a deeper understanding and application of course material, as well as the opportunity to explore the rich and varied career possibilities within the field of human services, students will complete 8 hours of observation within a pre-approved human services organization/ agency.  Students are tasked to observe, interview professionals, and participate when deemed appropriate and approved by on-site organization/agency supervisor. To complete the process, students will submit a thoughtful reflection, minimum of 5 pages and according to course policies, at the end of the semester (see Course Schedule for due date). Students are to share information and insights gained from observation experience in relation to course material and his/her growing understanding of the professional field of human services. (Note: It is essential that you are proactive in this process. Contact your organization/agency early in the semester. It is not acceptable to wait until last minute to complete your observation.) (Observation hours + Reflection paper = 100 points.) Possible Observation & Interview Questions (Students are encouraged to include additional questions relevant to areas of personal interest and/or specific to agency/organization.) Prior to observation: 1. Name of agency/organization. Human services and/or programs offered? 2. Who is the recipient of services? 3. Are there specific criteria used to identify participants for services? Are there any specific criteria/qualifications used to identify participants for services? 4. How are services/programs funded? 5. Where does service delivery occur? 6. What methods of intervention are used? 7. What is the goal of services? Interview Q&A (you are encouraged to ask any questions about any information you were unable to obtain in the ‘prior to observation’ portion.): 1. What is your job title? What are your job responsibilities? 2. What training did you have to qualify for or complete for this job? 3. What are some traits/qualities necessary for this position? 4. How do you define human service problems? 5. What are some of the joys of the work you do? What keeps you motivated and/or inspired? How do you prevent burnout? 6. What are some of the challenges you experience in this position? If appropriate, can you share a example of a challenge or frustration you had to work through? 7. What is the history of the organization? The changes have occurred? How have the job responsibilities of the human service professional changed? 8. How does current social policy impact the work you do/the services your organization is able to offer? Reflection: Your reflection will include information about the organization, highlights from your interview with the human service professional, and your experience while observing. You are NOT to state word for word what was stated in the interview. You are encouraged to share any new insights, perspectives, and knowledge you gained during this opportunity. It is important to note what your ‘take away’ is from this experience.
