Tiwi camps consisted of a number of related families or one large family. If the camp contained more than one family unit, the groups were usually related through men. During the rainy season, November through April, people needed protection against the heavy rains. They built small dwellings made of wooden poles covered with bark. In the dry season, May through October, dwellings were made with leaf-covered branches tied together to give shade. Households were the basic social units.
