Linux GUI & Windows Managers 2

Introduction
Linux in past developed to provide an operating system, which will be beneficial to thousands of
users, and it helps by providing open source, which makes it more useful and adoptable in the
market. Still now market is not open much for Linux, but now this operating system is used by
many companies as it involves several features which are even not available on Windows
Operating systems.
Windows operating system already comes with some many GUI features which linux is not able
to provide when it has just started. But now, as with the growth of technology several GUI’s are
developed which help us to work on Linux platform, because of this the adoptability of Linux
increases and it makes it more accepted into the market.
There are many users who are currently using Linux operating system but are not aware of the
features, such as advantages and disadvantages when it is compared between Command Line
Interface and Graphical User Interface. So, there are many features and functionalities which
helps user to work on Linux platform with the help of GUI.
CLI (Command Line Interface) & GUI (Graphical User Interface)
We will compare Linux Command Line Interface (CLI) to Graphical User Interface (GUI) on the
basis of following topics:
1. Ease
2. Control
3. Multitasking
4. Speed
5. Resources
6. Scripting
7. Remote Access
8. Diverse
9. Strain
Linux GUI & Windows Managers 3

[Command Line v/s GUI]
Let’s talk about one by one on the above points:
1. Ease:
CLI – Using command line interface, it’s not easy for all of the users to operate on Command
Line Interface, on CLI, there are many commands which some of the users need to remember
and get command over language, and it’s difficult for everyone to remember all those
commands.
GUI – Working with mouse is quiet easy instead of working with command like interface, as
it becomes difficult to work on command line interface, user will easily pick up the user
interface type of functionalities can easily help them to do this and use navigation features
using Linux.
2. Control:
CLI: On command line interface, user have good command over operating system and file
system, which help users to copy a specific file from one location to another using just a
simple command line. There are many such easy commands which user can run using CLI.
GUI: On GUI, there are plenty of simple file system and operating system features present
which will help the user to identify and approach the functionality easily. But still all the
features are not includes on GUI and still users need to connect to CLI to perform many other
features.
3. Multitasking:
CLI: Although many command line environments are capable of multitasking, they do
not offer the same ease and ability to view multiple things at once on one screen.
Linux GUI & Windows Managers 4

GUI: GUI users have windows that enable a user to view, control, and manipulate
multiple things at once and are much faster to navigate when compared with a command
line.
4. Speed:
CLI: Only few lines of commands are required to perform task, and user just need
keyboard to navigate a command line interface. Command line interface will be helpful if
user has good command over commands and don’t have sufficient resources, commands
perform directly and has good power to execute.
GUI: Speed of GUI can be slower, because there are many events are wrapped, and on
the background those commands are called, as these actions are not initiated directly, and
those are called from GUI, so it will take more time than CLI, but it will help user to
perform many useful tasks directly instead of performing them through commands.
[Command Line v/s GUI]
5. Resources:
CLI: The number of resources required to perform commands on machine is very less
and it will be very helpful for those, who wants to work in high performance environment
and need good power over the machine. [Command Line v/s GUI]
GUI: A GUI requires more system resources because of each of the elements that need to
be loaded such as icons, fonts, etc. In addition, video drivers, mouse drivers, and
other drivers that need to be loaded will also take additional resources. [Command Line
v/s GUI]
6. Scripting:
CLI: Performing a task or execute a program is easier by using number of commands
which can be executed and perform much better. ...
