Mexican American War: Expansion of Borders and State Interventions
Introduction
The expansion of borders has served as the major foundation for settling up the war scenarios between two nations many times in history. However, the most important one in this respects stands as the Mexican-American war
of mid 19th century(Sullivan, 2012). A close overview of the war showcases some major highlights of the war as the ability of Texas as an independent state, its privileged inclusion in the Mexican territories first and then the desire of the Texan state ruling to be annexed as the constitutional state of United States. The intervention of power, desire to build new territories in the form of broader expansions as well as the nature of this expansion served as the main source of war. Mexico got defeated due to the fact that its control of over Texas was already lost. The intervention of State as a powerful medium to gain border advantages led to this defeat for Mexico; the settlement procedure of migrants from United States to Texas led to this conclusion.
The Role of Texan Settlement: Political Failure of Mexico
At first, it is significant to note here that the Texas was the province in 1830s that drew attention of United States in terms of expanding its borders; the state had rich lands and farms which would yield great crops every year. From economical perspective, the administrative position of United States was eying at controlling the governance in Texan regions (Sullivan, 2012). However, the wish of American government as not unknown to Mexican government at that time as they knew that American forces would intervene at some point in future to gain authority over Texas. Therefore, Mexican government took the initiative to ‘settle down’ American migrants living in the nearby areas to Texas. This offer stands as the first political failure of Mexican government because the emerging of US based population in Texas enhanced the political and economical effects over Mexico negatively (Sullivan, 2012).
Further, led by Stephen Austin, several migrants moved to Texas, initially following the provisions offered to them. It is also noteworthy here that till that time of migration, the population of Texas mainly consisted Tejanos (teh HAH nohs), to defend the province. In 1821, only about 4,000 Tejanos lived in Texas. However, the migration caused the rise of migrated population and in a decade, the number of migrants reached to over 30,000. This fact is also seen as political failure of Mexico before losing control over Texas. The state had Mexican culture in the form of local tribes but emergence of American population not only disturbed the population stats, but also it set the ground of mutiny in future because Anglo-Texan people—the migrants were referred as this—came with their intentions clear which was to control the region and rule it as per their own norms and social values (Fischer, 2009).
The above can also be understood by the fact that though Mexican government assisted in settling down migrants in Texas by...
