Timing. Recording prior to engaging in a target behavior (like smoking or eating) seems to produce more reactivity than recording after engaging in the behavior. In general, reactivity is more likely to occur at the beginning of a recording program, and is likely to weaken over time. That is why we do not recommend self-monitoring as a sole intervention; the effects won’t last.
