Throughout the semester, I ask that you compose and reflect upon four photographs that get you thinking about the study of social problems, the course readings, lectures, and our class discussions. The pictures can be anything that catches your eye – they can be posed or candid – portraying a person or object – literal or abstract - a potential photo might even be a newspaper headline you come across. While the photos can be anything that gets you thinking sociologically, I ask that you think creatively and have varied subject matter between your photos.

I know this sounds broad, so below I have included an example. Take a good look at this and if you have any questions, be sure to ask me in class or schedule an appointment to come by my office hours. The project is a large chunk of your final grade, and I want to make sure everyone does well!

The reflections that accompany your photographs should be at least 750 words for each photo. In these reflections, I ask that you explain the photo in a sociologically relevant manner, but from there, you can really take these in any direction you wish, as long as you offer relevant insights and connections to course material. By connections, I mean a number of relevant citations to legitimate sources. We can talk about citations later in the semester, but I recommend always including at least one course reading for each photo, to ensure you’re engaging with course concepts / materials.

These reflections are an opportunity to organize your thoughts in a manner that will strengthen both your creative writing skills and critical thinking abilities.

If you are having a difficult time with these reflections, look to the example I have included below, and please speak with me

Education
Education is the foundation of the society, which supports the growth of the communities in the world by creating the societies, which treats everyone equally. There is a long way to go to achieve this idea of ideal society. According to Article 26 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, all of the individuals who exist on this earth hav
e right to education (Hernandez, 2017). The picture was published in United Nations website under the topic Education and its impact on society.
This picture gives relief that access to education is increasing but on the other side, it also raises question how long will it take to get it done completely. In order to implement the global initiative there are several challenges in front of us. We need to address those issues at national level in each country so that nations can walk shoulder to shoulder with UN goals.
Terrorism:
It is not new that terrorism has spread destruction in the name of religion or undue demands. As per Carnoy (2017), it is a global problem, which has shattered economies. Be it case of Pakistan, Afghanistan and African countries, which are suffering and whole economy is at stake due it. It has created environment of mistrust and fear among people. They are afraid to go out and regular life is not normal in these regions. There is a need to implement an educational approach so that children can be made aware of the reasons of its existence. It will help them to follow the path of truth and avoid misguidance on the way.
Mindfulness:
Stress is the new companion of life, which needs to be dealt with. The education system does not teach how to cope with it. It leads to survive competition and find innovative ways for existence. It is required that life skills should be taught in schools so that at the very beginning students know how to keep themselves happy even when the circumstances are adverse in their life. The education should be wholesome development of personality and thinking process so that distinguishing between right and wrong can be based on reasons from life.
Politics:
The current politics is about power and increasing the control. Politicians in every country are finding ways to lure votes and adopting strategies, which ensure their victory for the position. As mentioned by Taranenko, Rusetskiy, Yanova, Okorokova and Aygumov (2019), common man is fighting for survival, battling inflation, unemployment, loans and interests while politician are banking on tax payer’s money giving rise to corruption and fulfilling of selfish motives.
Technology:
Indeed technology and its advancements are taking place with fast pace. In third world countries where it is difficult to make ends meet, the other part of world is using high-end technology to make weapons and devices, which can challenge human intelligence in all new ways. The knowledge in domains more required rather specializing in discourses. Education is the answer to this problem. The more it is spread, the more opportunities will be created for future.
Sustainability:
We all know that planet is on verge of losing its reserve of natural resources. If we are not stopping now, then our future generation will be left with nothing to use. How education can play a role in reducing the intolerable lifestyle of humans? According to Fedorenko, Velychko, Stopkin and Chorna (2019), the intellectual and emotional approach towards finding the solution can be an answer. The upcoming generation, which can be educated about the problem, schools can play a crucial role in preserving nature. They can be gatekeepers in monitoring practices and pinpoint those who are not acting responsibly.
Character:
The major role of education is to form the characters within the individuals. It is that moral fiber, which decides how the individual is going to act in a particular situation. We all can witness that world around us is changing rapidly and it is difficult to keep pace with it. It is required to be sturdy in such circumstance. People have short temperament towards others; they are less accommodating and lose patience easily. In this era of interaction through social media, they are looking for comfort on digital space. It has questioned ethics and code of conduct giving threats to integrity and privacy concerns.
I personally feel that education is a weapon to create modern society, which is need of the hour. The society is fearless, ready to give back by helping others and bridging the differences by acceptability and tolerance. It is a way to bring light in the life of children who are yet to witness the future and the growth.

Gender
Gender is a topic of debate and discussion in every society, community, schools, corporates, between you and me even. What makes a gender strong and other weak? Why society perceives one gender from a particular perception and does not bother to give due respect to other. Why has one section of the society to fight for their rights in Parliament so that they get equal status in the society?
The picture was picked from one the article published by Forbes defining the gender roles in the21st century. The article highlighted the breaking of barriers, which led to stereotypes and how corporates are emerging from this notion that equal chance should be given to all irrespective of their gender status. The discussion is quite debatable because except in few areas the dominance of a particular gender can be observed.
