Throughout "An Elephant Crackup?" Siebert gestures towards modes of consciousness that differ significantly f rom the model of an individual thinking. He desc1ibes a herd of elephants as "in essence, one incomprehensibly massive eleph:rnt." He observes that saving elephants from extinction "will demand the ultimate act of deep, interspecies emp:ithy." And he cites Gay Bradshaw's c,lll for the development of a "trans-species psyche" that will allow humans to "be elephanrs." How would one go about creating these new modes of consciousness? Does Siebert's n:irrativc provide any hints about how the two species might begin to share the same conceptual world?
