Thomas Kuhn rejected the traditional picture of science as progressing steadily and evenly toward ever greater knowledge, arguing instead that science changes by a series of revolutions, in which old pictures or paradigms lose out to new ones. On Kuhn’s view, it is quite unclear whether there is one-direction progress in science, since the change from old paradigms to new ones is so great that there is no common ground between them on which to base a judgment.
