Erving Goffman's Definition of stigma(1963) According to Scambler (1989), people diagnosed as 'epileptic' are more likely to experience negative consequences due to the fear and anxiety of being discriminated ('Felt' stigma) than they are to experience actual episodes of discrimination ('Enacted' stigma). Hence, the fear and embarrassment caused by the awareness of the presence of a stigmatised attribute are more detrimental to the person's wellbeing than the chances of experiencing actual discrimination. Certain illnesses have particular meanings attached to them Mental illness HIV/Aids STDs Disability Impelement (loss of limb) and Disability (the social experience of imperement Stigma according to Goffman (1963) vary across time/space.
