This week you will research information on the NCIC website for information regarding data collection, storage, and retrieval. This week’s Assignment will help you prepare for a larger Assignment in Unit 7 which requires knowing what data you can utilize from NCIC to conduct a traffic stop and communicate with other states.



Createan 8-10 slide PowerPoint® Presentation incorporating speaker notes outlining the following:



  • Describe how is data collected, stored, and retrieved.

  • Discuss the importance of data collection, retrieval, and analysis as it applies to officer safety and the criminal justice system.

  • Identify four or more methods of data collection, storage, retrieval, and analysis as it relates to the criminal justice system and their importance.

  • Explain the importance of NCIC in a traffic stop and two or more benefits crime analysis has for both the community and law enforcement.

  • Identify three types of queries an officer may retrieve from NCIC.



Note:Research is required for this assignment. Locate relevant information about the fundamental principles of how data collection, storage, retrieval, and analysis is conducted within the criminal justice system and distinguish between the relative importance of those principles.

Introduction
NCIC is a section of FBI
It handles computerized criminal data
It is responsible for data storage and analysis

t also maintains the database of information (Hitt, 2000)
NCIC also called the National Crime Information Center is a section of the FBI that deals with storage and handling of data. It plays a very crucial part in law enforcement since it is an electronic storehouse of crime data. This storehouse can be accessed by all criminal justice agencies throughout the US, at all times. NICI handles data in that it responsible for gathering, storing and retrieving data as and when required. It is also responsible for maintaining this database. As of 2015, NCIC has hold of 12 million active records classified in 21 files. These are divided into 14 persons files and 7 property files.

NCIC’s data collection and storage system
NCIC stores data virtually in their designated computers
The stored data can be accessed using predetermined codes
These codes maybe in the form of ID numbers, License numbers etc.
NCIC stores all its data in a virtual manner in designated computers. The information is entered by criminal justice agencies and is then made accessible to all law enforcement agencies. In order to access the available data, codes like ID numbers, license numbers etc are used. NCIC act as an intermediary between those seeking information and the data available. NCIC’s efficiency policy requires it to verify if the data available is up-to-date and accurate. Only then is it made available to inquiring agencies.
NCIC cooperates with all agencies in controlling crime and enforcing order including the FBI, local, state, federal and tribal criminal justice systems.
