This week, we’ve spent some time exploring photography as an artistic form. To help you explore what we’ve learned about, your Unit 4 assignment will consist of writing an essay addressing using the following criteria:


Essay Requirements:


• 1,000 words or roughly four double-spaced pages.
• Make use of at least three scholarly sources to support and develop your ideas. Our course text may serve as one of these three sources.
• Your essay should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the READ and ATTEND sections.
• Be sure to cite your sources using proper APA format (7th edition). For help with APA, visit the Bethel Library website to explore a plethora of APA-related tutorials, help videos and resources.


Essay Prompt:
• In this essay, you will choose one photographic image to critique as a work of art. You may choose an image from either the Straight Photography, The Documentarists or The Modern Eye sections of Chapter 11. Questions for you to consider in your essay:
o Why did you choose this particular image? What appeals to you about it? What intrigues you?
o What ‘school’ or movement does it relate to i.e., straight, documentary or modern and what are some of the characteristics of your chosen image as it relates to the movement or school it’s a part of?
o Based on everything we’ve learned so far about art (and photography), how would you evaluate this photograph as a work of art?

The p
icture Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859); great Victorian engineer, who build great western railways and Bristol's Clifton suspension bridge. He spent last years of his life on very doomed project, the great eastern, which is a gigantic ocean going iron steamship. The photo pictured in front of huge chains of a braking mechanism that was used in an attempt launch of the great eastern. The picture depicted scene of Millwall in 1857. This attracted many spectators, who witnessed chains whip out of control and threw worker over the crowd to his death.
Brunel represents tower of strength. The Victorian manhood is all about birth of photography. Robert Howlett, today is forgot figure of the history of photography. However, Howlett’s Portrait of Isambard Kingdom Brunel is a well-known photograph of the 19th century. As informed by Martin and Jacobus (2014), the portrait made on location at a time when most formal portraiture done. It has explained as the first and foremost greatest environmental portrait. The Brunel was 52 years’ old, when the photograph was taken. He was one of the most celebrated men of his age, in 1857 November, as a result of great public interest.
Robert Howlett commissioned to make documentary photographs of the ships under construction at Mill wall Shipyard in London. At that time, Robert Howlett is one of the most accomplished young photographers of the England. In the picture, Brunel looked at one side and puff on a cigar. His expression is determined and confident. The muddy trouser and boots of Brunel shows how he used hand on approach for getting things done. He usually carried a strap bag attached to his chest. His bag contained cigars. The image represents one of the heroic figures of that time. However, the chain illustrates the giant scale of ship he created.
