This week we examined the concept of 'Microagressions,' which can occur on the basis of race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and so on. At first blush, microaggressions might be seen as instances of one individual saying something to another that is offensive, to a greater or lessor extent. So in that sense, what separates microagressions from the typical social faux pas in which someone says something we'd consider to be in bad taste? In your response explore what might make microagressions seem something more than just individual infractions. The parameters for your response are as follows:

  1. The response must be between 850-1150 words. Students that fall short of the required word count will receive a 10% deduction.

  2. You must cite a minimum of 3 scholarly sources-- news media articles do not count as scholarly sources, only peer reviewed journals, books, etc.

  3. You must cite all sources clearly and consistently, regardless of the citation style you choose be sure to keep it consistent.

  4. You must include a works cited (not part of the word count) at the end.

  5. You response should include considerable reflection on the pertinent course terms and concepts, failing to reference these consistently throughout will result in a deduction

Microaggression and Social Faux Pas
Microaggression is different from social faux pas. Social faux pas can be defined as a slip or blunder in the arena of etiquette, manner or conduct. It usually tends to be unintentional. However, microaggression is a term which is used to describe situations where certain harsh verbal comments or non-verbal attributes are expressed which represent implicit biases of people against certain marginalized groups. As a result of the implicit harsh comments or actions, according to Williams, the receiver or the victim of microaggressions are inevitably left in an extremely uncomfortable situation where they feel that they are insulted. For instance, microaggression is represented in an incident where a black woman who is trying to make her point in a meeting is continuously being interrupted by the white male colleagues. In this case, this is an instance of double marginalization, where the victim is black as well as a woman. Therefore, this is an instance of racial and gender microaggressions which is especially represented through the actions of the male colleagues. In this case, although the male colleagues do not harass the female colleague explicitly, their disregard for the female colleague’s gender as well as racial and ethnic identity is explicit from their actions where they represent a certain discriminatory attitude towards the gender as well as ethnic identity of the woman.
Microaggression is different from social faux pas from another perspective as well....
