This week, we are talking about the effects of human overpopulation and how it correlates with extinction of other species.


This article is a real time example of how the overpopulation of humans and our demand for resources is causing detriment and extinction of another- the Orangoutang.


After reading the article answer the following questions:


1. How are humans effecting the Orangoutang habitat in the process of obtaining palm oil?

Palm oil is the highest yielding and most widely used vegetable oil from palm tree and about 50 million tonnes of palm oil is used every year. This increase in demand has increased pressure on palm oil producing countries in order to expand their palm plantations. As a result, 80% of mammal’s habitats have been destroyed in past 20 years. Likewise, illegal destruction of rainforest led to endangerment of one-third of remaining orangutans. Other species of animals is also affected due to this mass destruction and deforestation (Bussing, 2016).

Over 50,000 orangutans from the islands of Sumatra and Borneo have died because of the deforestation activities for palm oil extraction.
