Executive summary
Presently in the slow economy the companies are taking more practical approach to
recruit people. Soon after hiring, the next most important step is to accelerate the process of
internalization of the new recruit. So it is important to ensure the performance and retention of
the new recruits. On-boarding and induction programs play a significant role in ensuring the
successful value addition by a new recruit. This essay explains a problematic work experience
that I have faced in my previous organization. The essay analyses the situation using relevant
concepts from the human resources management and recommendations are made.
A problematic work experience
A problematic work experience when I had joined my previous company is explained
here briefly. The company did not have any planned and designed on-boarding and induction
program in place. The initial meeting and the interview was in a hotel lobby where the human
resources manager had put up in the city. In the first week of joining, I kept on following my
predecessor to learn his job role and work responsibilities. There was no proper hand-over or
documentation process and my predecessor completed his notice period and left. It took me
almost a couple of months to understand using the basic systems and it took me about three
months to have an understanding of my job role. During this period my manager/ mentor was not
providing the required guidance and was pressurizing me for meeting my targets, even before I
could understand the company, its products and my responsibilities. At times the thought of
resigning the company crosses my mind.
Analysis of the situation
First impression lasts. Developing positive work relationships and developing a sense of
belonging goes a long way in retaining the employees (Wayne, 1997). Many people spend more
time at their workplace than with their family and friends. When emotional connect develops
between the new employee and his co worker he is more likely to be willing to work with the
organization. So organizations create opportunities for the new employees to meet and interact
with staff from different departments and levels of the organization.
