This research aims to fill the gap of understanding in how technology characteristics relate to each other and the decision to make,sell or rent the IP by investigating how the appropriability (ability to extract profits from an innovation), transaction costs (costs involved to sell or license a technology), development requirements (resources required to develop the invention) and risk/reward ratio (potential returns and the risk of achieving them) affect the make/sell/rent decision during a technology’s development. This is in the context of maximizing the value of the invention as measured by NPV and ROI.
