This question refers to a survey of a university's faculty members on affirmative action policies for the university. The survey was based on telephone interviews with a random sample of 1,001 faculty members conducted in December 1995.

One of the questions asked was, "Do you favor or oppose using race, religion, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin as a criterion for admission to the university?" Of the 165 arts and humanities faculty members, 63% favored the policy, while of the 223 engineering, mathematical, and physical sciences faculty, 37% favored it. (Round your answers to one decimal place.)

%

Use the conservative margin of error to compute an approximate 95% confidence interval for the percent of them in the population who favored this policy.

(b)

Find the conservative margin of error (as a percent) for the engineering and sciences faculty.

%

Use the conservative margin of error to compute an approximate 95% confidence interval for the percent of them in the population who favored this policy.

(c)

Compare the approximate 95% confidence intervals you found in parts (a) and (b), and comment on whether you think faculty members in these disciplines in the population differed on this question at the time of the poll.

Since there     overlap between the two intervals, there is     evidence to indicate that the arts and humanities faculty members and the engineering and sciences faculty members differed on this question.
