This project gives you the opportunity to practice photography and writing to learn about Canadian Environmental Perspectives. Your job is to take a photograph of something that fits within the topic of Canadian Environmental Perspectives, and to write a short essay of interpretation and analysis. In your essay you should make connections between the image you have taken and the themes explored in this course. How does your image illustrate a concept or theory presented in the course readings and course material? What are the (perhaps unseen, off-camera) processes that produced what is shown in the image? If the image is of a well-known landmark or place, have you found books or articles written by people who’ve taken similar images of the same place?

Be creative in selecting the image you have taken. Explore the connections between your photograph and any themes covered in the course. And, it is also fine to also draw on your own personal experiences as related to the photograph. Why did you choose it? Why is it significant for this course?

Please consider carefully the ethical dimensions of your photograph. It is usually okay to take photographs in large, public areas – like a busy street --- where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. But otherwise, please be careful with people’s privacy.

Don’t forget invisibility: sometimes the most important and interesting thing about an area photograph involves the things it doesn’t show. Don’t worry if your photograph doesn’t meet all of the standards of a professional photograph: what matters most is the thoughtful interpretation and analysis of the photograph in relation to relevant themes from the course and related content.

Your photograph must be included into your paper (simply inserting into a word processing document is fine). The paper, including photograph will be around 5 pages in length (around 1,200 words). Use a 12 pt font and double space with normal margins. Please include a cover page with your name and the title of your paper and also include at the end of the paper, a list of references cited, using a recognized citation format.
