Written Assignment – Choose A, B, or C The written assignment is a brief essay applying developmental principles to either: one’s own psychosocial development, that of a child you observe, or another adult you interview. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of some of the psychosocial developmental theories. Students are expected to use at least 2 of the main theories discussed in class. The paper should be approximately 5 pages APA (7th edition) style format and include a minimum of 3 empirical references* (the text can be one). This assignment is graded on content and writing/syntax. There is more information about this assignment posted on our Canvas site. *An empirical reference is published work based off of data. Pop websites like WebMD, VeryWellMind, etc are not appropriate for academic/professional writing. The supplemental readings for this course are good examples of empirical references. Please ask if you are unsure! Option A – Interview/Observe – Child & Caregiver The main goal of this assignment is for you to describe and analyze a child’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development as well as the caregiver-child interaction in light of course material. The analysis requires you to integrate your observations and relevant theories, as well as cultural and environmental variables. · Observe an infant, toddler, or middle-aged child as they interact with a caregiver for at least 45 minutes. The caregiver can be a parent, babysitter, sibling, daycare worker, etc. Make sure to get permission of the caregiver and child (as applicable) before you proceed. This person should NOT be a family member, someone with whom you are emotionally involved, or working with. They should be representative of normative development. Your observation notes will provide the material for the paper. These notes do not need to be typed, but please attach them to the paper (you can scan them or take a picture of them and paste into your word document that you submit via TurnItIn). · Briefly introduce the child, the caregiver, and the context of the observation in your paper to give the reader an understanding of the setting. · Use individual theories to describe and analyze the child’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development in relation to the caregiver interaction and the environment. · Create an ecomap to identify and illustrate the key systems or domains (societal, neighborhood, etc.) that are relevant to this child at their current stage of development. Justify why they are relevant. · Within your paper, the dynamics of this ecomap should be discussed—that is, the reader should be able to follow the ecomap based on your paper, which includes the application of theories to describe and analyze the relationships presented in the ecomap. · Describe and analyze the ways in which the cultural contexts (e.g., class, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexual orientation) are shaping the child’s behavior and development and the child-caregiver interaction. Option B – Interview an Adult The main goals of this assignment are for you to sharpen your interviewing skills and to apply relevant theories to help you understand the person you interview. This is an opportunity to “play” with theories to see how well they help you broaden your understanding of the person in the context of his or her social environment. · Interview an adult or young adult for at least 45 minutes. This person should NOT be a family member, someone with whom you are emotionally involved, or working with. They should be representative of normative development. You may wish to observe this person in some part of their environment such as gym, mall, and home with family to augment the interview material. Your observation notes will provide the material for the paper. These notes do not need to be typed, but please attach them to the paper (you can scan them or take a picture of them and paste into your word document that you submit via TurnItIn). · Briefly introduce the person and the context of the observation/interview in your paper to give the reader an understanding of the setting. · Use individual theories to describe and analyze their physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development in relation to the family and the cultural context (e.g., class, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexual orientation) in which they live. · Create an ecomap to identify and illustrate the key systems or domains (societal, neighborhood, etc.) that are relevant to this person at their current stage of development. Option C—Self assessment The written assignment is an analysis and application of developmental principles and theories to one’s own psychosocial development. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of psychosocial developmental theories as applied to their own personal history. · Instead of observation notes, you can provide notes on your own development and any landmark events that have occurred in your life that you feel have shaped your development in a particular way. You may wish to ask someone who knows you well to answer “interview” questions about you and see if they map onto your own perceptions of yourself. Observation notes are not required for the self-reflection, although they may be extremely helpful in organizing your thoughts. These notes do not need to be typed, but please attach them to the paper (you can scan them or take a picture of them and paste into your word document that you submit via TurnItIn). · Briefly introduce yourself in your paper. · Use individual theories to describe and analyze your physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development in relation to the family and the cultural context (e.g., class, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexual orientation) in which you live. · Create an ecomap to identify and illustrate the key systems or domains (societal, neighborhood, etc.) that are relevant to you at your current stage of development.
