This morning, Andrea, a student working in the outpatient clinic, notices two men sitting in the waiting area. She recognizes one as her dad’s business partner, Mr. Brown, and greets him. She recalls that in a recent visit she made to her parents’ home for dinner her father had expressed concern about Mr. Brown’s failing health, which has begun to interfere with his earnings. Mr. Brown and the other man are chatting amiably, despite that they make a striking contrast—the silver-haired Mr. Brown and the seamy young man with a torn leather jacket. She remembers her dad’s admiration for Mr. Brown’s ability to “cross classes” and have friends in all walks of life. She goes to hang up her coat and when she returns to the waiting area the other man has disappeared and Mr. Brown is sitting alone. Andrea is somewhat shy about her assignment to take Mr. Brown’s clinical history. Mr. Brown seems relaxed about it, however, and even a little bemused as she earnestly questions him and checks off the answers on her sheet. She leads him to the dressing room where he will undress for his tests. While heading back to her desk she notices that something had fallen from his pocket just before he entered the dressing room. She rushes back and picks up the packet. Inside the brown bag are a syringe and a small plastic bag of white powder. On the outside of the bag, written in a smudged scrawl on a piece of white tape, it says, “Brown, $450.” She feels panic rising up in her chest and hopes beyond hope that her suspicion is unfounded.
