Absenteeism and Its Impact on Productivity 3
1. INTRODUCTION
Absenteeism of employees at an organization can represent serious issues / problems at
an organization. Absenteeism refers to the habit or pattern pertaining to an employee in
terms of being missing or being absent at work which in most instances is for nor valid or
actual reasons (Dixit & Bhati 2012; Leblebici 2012; Gosselin et al 2013). Naturally the
first and the immediate consequence of such an act leads to critical impacts on the
productivity as there are time, monetary and resource level wastage on account of this
(Dixit & Bhati 2012; Leblebici 2012; Gosselin et al 2013). Even at much larger
organizations, where the company employs sufficient number of temporary employees,
the same may pose significant issues as the experience, expertise and skillsets of a full
time employee are generally not matched by the temporary employee (Dixit & Bhati
2012; Leblebici 2012; Gosselin et al 2013).
Thus a need to undertake a detailed study to understand, assess, review and determine the
root causes of the absenteeism issue an finding suitable resolutions for the same remains
to be primary objective of business leaders as any impact to productivity has adverse
consequences across business profitability, overall competitive advantage and even its
survival / growth. In this context, the objective or focus of this study is to undertake a
detailed assessment of absenteeism and its impacts on productivity. Further, this study
shall focus on the prevalence and causes of absenteeism at Toyota Motor Corporation,
Australia. The rationale behind choosing Toyota, Australia for this study is the
prevalence of the absenteeism issue at the organization.

to absenteeism, organizations are better placed for addressing and preventing the issue
much more effectively (Lerner et al 2012; Merrill et al 2013; Fine 2012).

understanding, evaluating, and critically observing the primary causes / originations of
the trends / levels of absenteeism issue for suitably determining effective solutions for the
same remains to be primary objective of business leaders as any impact to productivity
has adverse consequences across business profitability / growth, overall competitive

advantages and even the survival and sustained growth (Lerner et al 2012; Merrill et al
2013; Fine 2012).
The project scope which gains its basis and focus from this and shall over the course of
this study and through critical analysis of data as well as by assessing the findings shall
have the scope both at a broader / high level from the domain perspective as well as from
a specific / ground level from the organization perspective,
At a broader / high level stand point, the project scope shall be to undertake a
critical assessment of absenteeism, the implications / impacts on productivity and

critical assessment of absenteeism, the implications / impacts on productivity and
consequent ramifications for Toyota Motor Corp., at Australia at a strategic,
operational and more tactical level.
Further the project scope shall be to undertake the study in a manner that is more robust
in terms of the research process and research methods used through the application of
reliable means like quantitative methods, quantitative data (both primary as well as
secondary), and other statistical tools to ensure the overall reliability of the research level
outcome.

3. PROJECT OBJECTIVE
In drawing from the background of the research to be undertaken, its primary focus as
well as the overall scope of the research project, the major set of objectives to form part

assessments and suitable documentation of the factors contributing to absenteeism,
organizations are better placed for addressing and preventing the issue much more
