Christian zeal of Brother Raymond (5 sentences)
Brother Raymond is much driven towards making the dispute a successful one for the Christians. Hence, he is driven towards choosing the best only in order to be the face of the dispute. He thinks that he is not good enough for such a holy Christian cause. But he is also very much aware of his religious teaching. That is exactly why he forbids Pablo from bullying or exerting any sort of physical power upon the Jews.
His scheme of using Brother Christiani (who was formerly Jewish) (5 sentences)
Brother Raymond things that the Jews will be comparatively easier to convert when they are persuaded to do so by a former Jew who is now a Christian. Moreover, Brother Raymond wants someone who can fight for Christianity and knows a great deal about it in order to persuade others and also was formerly one of the Jews. Pablo Christiani, as brother Raymond already knows, will do everything in his power in order to win the disputation. He knew that, although Christianity preaches non-violence and forgiveness and although they guarantee themselves to not be as barbaric as the French, Pablo Christiani will still try his level best to win. This is why he schemes of using Pablo.
Attitude of King James of Aragon (5 sentences)
King James has an attitude that is quite easy when he talks about the disputation. He suggests brother Raymond to be the face of the Christians in the disputation. King James thinks that the disputation can be won easily since he thinks Jews aren’t good enough to present a valid point and hence, they do not stand a chance. The real reason is that king James knows nothing about Judaism and hence he underestimates its teaching and everything related to it. He behaves like the disputation is some kind of sport or tournament that is meant for entertainment.
Arrogance of his wife the Queen Jolanda (5 sentences)
Queen Jolanda is a Jew herself, converted to Christianity. She has made conversion, her life’s motto. The queen thinks that her work on conversion of Jews from Judaism to Christianity will lead the Jews in the best path of their lives. She, along with her husband, believes that her love for the Jews is incomparable because she is thinking about bringing out the best in them and “saving” them by converting them to Christianity. Queen Jolanda is sure that the Jews are in a dark place and needs savior from the messiah and she is going to be a bridge between them and the messiah by showing the Jews the light of salvation.
