Below is an example of how to conduct the seven hypothesis testing steps for a research question. Remember that these steps may look different depending on the type of research question you have. Whether you are looking for a relationship between variables or a difference between groups will make the biggest difference in your testing procedures, so be sure to think critically about what choices you need to make for your specific research question. Example Research Question: Is there a relationship between length of time exclusively breastfeeding and the length of paid maternity leave the mother took? · Hypotheses · H0: There is no relationship between length of time exclusively breastfeeding and the number of weeks of paid maternity leave the mother took. · Ha: There is a relationship between length of time exclusively breastfeeding and the number of weeks of paid maternity leave the mother took. · Critical Value · Results will be considered significant at alpha = .05. · Statistical Test and Assumptions · In order to test for a relationship between two continuous variables, I need to run a correlation test. I will test the following assumptions for a Pearson’s Correlation test. · Assumption #1: Both variables must be continuous. · Both length of time exclusively breastfeeding and number of weeks of paid maternity leave the mother took are measured in weeks. Both variables are numeric, continuous, and measured at the ratio level, so this assumption is not violated. · Assumption #2: Both variables must be normally distributed. Statistics How many weeks of paid maternity leave did you take? How long did you exclusively breastfeed in number of weeks? N Valid 35 36 Missing 1 0 Skewness 1.896 .820 Std. Error of Skewness .398 .393 Kurtosis 4.702 .750 Std. Error of Kurtosis .778 .768 · According to the skewness and kurtosis values, one of the variables (length of paid maternity leave) is not normally distributed. Therefore, this assumptions is violated. · Because the assumption of normality is violated, I will run a Spearman’s rho and Kendal’s tau instead of Pearson’s Correlation. · Inferential Testing · In order to test my hypothesis, I will run a Spearman’s rho and Kendall’s tau. Correlations How many weeks of paid maternity leave did you take? How long did you exclusively breastfeed in number of weeks? Kendall's tau_b How many weeks of paid maternity leave did you take? Correlation Coefficient 1.000 -.027 Sig. (2-tailed) . .834 N 35 35 How long did you exclusively breastfeed in number of weeks? Correlation Coefficient -.027 1.000 Sig. (2-tailed) .834 . N 35 36 Spearman's rho How many weeks of paid maternity leave did you take? Correlation Coefficient 1.000 -.015 Sig. (2-tailed) . .932 N 35 35 How long did you exclusively breastfeed in number of weeks? Correlation Coefficient -.015 1.000 Sig. (2-tailed) .932 . N 35 36 · Reporting Results · According to Kendall’s tau, there is no significant relationship between the number of weeks of paid maternity leave the mother took and how long she exclusively breastfed, r = -.03, p = .834. · According to Spearman’s rho, there is no significant relationship between the number of weeks of paid maternity leave the mother took and how long she exclusively breastfed, r = -.02, p = .932. · Interpretation of findings · Given that both Kendall’s tau and Spearman’s rho reported extremely low correlation coefficients and extremely high significance levels when testing length of paid maternity leave and length of time exclusively breastfeeding, it is clear that the data does not support any kind of relationship between these variables. Therefore, I failed to reject the null hypothesis, and must assume that there is no significant relationship. This means that I do not have sufficient evidence to claim that there is a connection between how long women breastfeed and how much paid maternity leave they get.
