NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT Independent Work on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) You are to independently work on understanding Social and Emotional Learning. Please follow the directions below and submit your work electronically as an attached Word document by the due date. You are not to simply copy words from the text. Everything you write must be in your own words and not taken from this or any other text. Also bring a hard copy/printed version of your work to the next class so that it can be used as a reference/study guide. To begin learning about Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), we will go to the main source for information and research about the topic. The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has been on the forefront of SEL issues and research for the last two decades. Located here in Chicago, we will refer to its website for most of the information in this independent study. On line exist myriad resources regarding SEL and it is now considered an important part of child development, growth and learning. For the following questions, please click on CASEL’s website (http://www.casel.org/) to gain information. 1. Click on the tab, “WHAT IS SEL?” Watch the video and read each of the five core competencies. What does it mean to make SEL effective it educators have to have a systemic approach? 2. Click the “See SEL Impact” tab. Watch the video and read the six categories of how SEL impacts students. Which of these SEL impacts do you think are most important and why? 3. Under the tab, “WHAT IS SEL?” click on the “Competencies” tab. Read each of the competencies and watch the video that is linked to each of the five competencies. Which competency do you feel a teacher can have the most impact in improving? 4. You will notice that the five competencies are listed in a similar model to Brofenbrenner’s model. What do you think these theories both use a similar model? Under the tab, “WHAT IS SEL?” click on the “Approaches” tab. Read this entire section. Now, in the blue box titled, “Multiple Approaches Across Multiple Settings,” read the text and click on the “Classrooms” tab. Read this entire page. In the “Other Resources” tab, under the “Trends and best practices” section, click on the “Learn More” button. Click on one of the six “SEL Trends.” 5. Choose one of the SEL Trends that appeals to you. Click on it and learn more about it. Summarize what you found is the main advantage of this section and how you think this will help you when you are an educator. 6. For the video, “SEL Researcher Mark Greenberg Describes Key Aspects of Social and Emotional Learning,” (https://youtu.be/T8qYW-_vfZ4): a. Describe what type of SEL might a child who has been raised in a difficult/challenging home and social environment have and explain why. b. Explain why SEL is teachable. c. Explain why the teacher’s role in teaching high quality SEL to students is so important. d. Describe in what ways SEL are important in improving academics and describe how student behavior and engagement is improved when he/she learns to improve SEL skills. 7. Children’s levels of anxiety, depression and stress are on the rise. According to the following video clip, one in five children has a diagnosable mental health problem and even fewer receive help for this. The good news is that some of this may be preventable if we teach children how to manage their SEL. For the video, “Recent Research on Science Behind Social Emotional Learning” (https://youtu.be/FOL-Rn0QtEw): a. Please describe what you find is the most interesting aspect of this brief presentation and why? 8. As you are soon to be in education, it is important to understand that there are standards at the state level mandating that teachers must attend to SEL standards in the classroom. Fortunately, the CAESEL website has a direct link to help us determine teacher’s role as defined in state standards. In the “POLICY” tab, click on the “STATE” tab and read this section. After reading, click on the “State Scan Scorecard.” After reading this section, click on “Illinois.” Read and attempt to familiarize yourself with the standards that apply to all teachers who are licensed in the state of Illinois. What are your thoughts about this information? You can write about anything here. I am most interested in your unfiltered thoughts about a topic that may have been unfamiliar to you merely minutes ago. (For example, were you aware of this? Are you surprised that some states are mandating SEL? Might this influence your teaching style or what you teach? Etc.) 9. Here is one more document. In the READ section, click on the article from the Kappan entitled, “Educators’ social and emotional skills vital to learning.” This article discusses the importance of the teacher’s SEL skills and how these impact teaching and student learning. Please read the entire article completely and answer the following questions. a. In your Professional Reflections paper, I would like you to think back your favorite teacher. Which of the three “Teachers’ SEL” qualities do you think that your favorite teacher possessed the most and how did he/she use this during student interactions and instruction. 10. In the WATCH/LISTEN to the following three clips from Urban Prep Academy. a. Description of Urban Prep Charter Academy (Read this webpage) b. Pride Advisory Classes: Social and Emotional Support for Every Student (click to watch) c. Daily Assemblies: Deepening Relationships Through Ritual and Recognition (click to watch) After reading briefly about the school and learning about its emphasis, what role do you think SEL plays in the culture of the school and particularly in the development of identity among the students? 11. The last part of this SEL study, is to LISTEN to the audio clip in our D2L site, “Fall of the Cool Teacher .” This is an audio clip of a novice teacher who is challenged by a new and unfamiliar environment. He is learning of his limitations and his need to learn more about himself and his students in order to be effective. After listening to the audio clip, please answer the following questions. a. After listening to the audio clip, please refer to the Kappan article to use the theories presented in the “Stress and Burnout” section to explain the feelings of this teacher. b. Also referring to the audio clip, which of the four “Promising Interventions” from the same article do you think would help this teacher, students and classroom? Please use exact aspects of the interventions to support your choices. c. Also, how do you think that increasing the SEL training of the students might benefit this teacher? Please provide specific techniques from the “Build SEL into daily work.” Refer to the four techniques to support your thoughts. Only use the ones that you think will be most beneficial to the students and explain why you think this. Thank you!
