There are race, nationality, immigration, and ethnicity. I want you to focus on ethnicity rather than all of them. Instructions are in the file. A checklist is there too.

SOC168 Critical Autobiography Project: Paper #1 “Race, Ethnicity, Nationality, and/or Immigration and the Self” (5 pages, at least 2 sources, 50 points) In the second module, you learned the basic sociological concepts related to the social status based on race, ethnicity, nationality, and immigration. For some of you who are sociology majors, you may have already learned those concepts in the previous sociology courses. However, a review is always necessary and important. After learning the basic concepts and engaging in thoughtful discussion with your team members, you are to write this 5-page critical analysis reflecting on the social factors that have shaped who you are today. This paper will be the first section of the body of your Critical Autobiography Project. Treat it as a chapter of your "book"; therefore, make sure to have a thesis statement guiding this section. Overall Structure of Your Final Critical Autobiography Project • Introduction • Race/Ethnicity/Nationality/Immigration and the Self  This is the section you will develop in this assignment. • Gender/Sexual Orientation and the Self • Social Class and the Self • Sociological Discussion • Conclusion You must use at least two sources to write this paper. They can be the readings assigned for this course or any other scholarly sources (which means books and articles that you can access via the University Library, no Wikipedia or blogs! See also the Recommended Readings to get started). Use the ASA style of writing for citations and references. Download the following: o ASA Quick Style Guide o Checklist for Writing o Grading Rubric for Paper #1, #2, and #3 o Recommended Readings (If you need ideas on additional readings to use for your paper...) Instruction 1. To Begin: Read the following instructions carefully to grasp the overall picture of this paper. 2. Start Brainstorming: Choose one (or up to three) of the social statuses to focus on in this paper related to race, ethnicity, immigration, nationality, and/or any related concept of your choice. Brainstorm based on the following questions. How do you see and feel yourself based on the identity? What or who have influenced you to see yourself in that way? In what ways did they influence your identity? For more detailed brainstorming questions, please read the step 4. Jotting down on a piece of paper as your thoughts come up would be helpful to keep track. 3. Section Introduction: Write the paragraph on how you see yourself today in terms of the chosen status(es). Make sure to have this description in the first paragraph of your paper as an introductory statement of this section ("chapter"). Make sure you have a thesis statement for this section that is supported through the body of the section and map out the structure of your paper. The thesis statement will need to show the "roadmap" of your paper. Thus, this sentence should contain the event, people, and/or situation that have influenced your identity based on race, ethnicity, immigration, and/or nationality. https://csus.instructure.com/courses/96876/files/14623809/download?wrap=1 https://csus.instructure.com/courses/96876/files/14623945/download?wrap=1 https://csus.instructure.com/courses/96876/files/14623940/download?wrap=1 https://csus.instructure.com/courses/96876/files/14623941/download?wrap=1 SOC168 4. Section Body: Continue brainstorming based on the following questions. What are the social contexts, social events, social factors, and/or social interactions that have contributed to your sense of self based on the identity today? What were the major events or incidents (historical, societal, community, familial, peer-related, or individual) influenced how you see yourself? Who are the people that contributed to how you define yourself today? In what ways, did the events, the incidents, and the people influenced your self-concept? Describe them in details in clearly organized paragraph in the section body. To give thorough descriptions, you should choose to focus on a few of the key events, key incidents, and/or key persons rather than trying to cover everything that you can think of. The goal here is to give in-depth analyses of those key factors that shaped who you are and how they shaped you rather than shallow overview of your life. You may consider interviewing your siblings, friends, parents, grandparents, or relative to confirm or get more details of what had happened if you do not remember well. But, you are writing and describing your experiences from your own perspectives. Once you finish collecting your thoughts that came up in brainstorming, make sure to organize the above descriptions in a chronological order. Note the changes you experienced over time clearly. 5. Adding the Sociological Analysis: To analyze your autobiography critically, integrate the sociological concepts into the section body that you had developed. Reflect on what you learned in the module and use the concept where it is relevant. Make sure those concepts are defined in your own words before you apply them (i.e., paraphrasing). The more sociological analyses included, the better. Also, make sure to add the ASA style in-text citations (don’t forget to add the source to the references). 6. Section Conclusion: Conclude the paper by explaining how the above social contexts, social events, social factors, and/or social interactions contributed to who you are today. This paragraph should reiterate the thesis statement you provided in the introductory statement. 7. References: You must use at least two sources for this paper. Last page of your paper should be a reference list. Make sure to use the ASA style of references. 8. Organization: Use the appropriate subheadings to organize your paper. The goal is to make sure to guide the readers throughout your paper so they do not get lost in your paper. Follow the instructions found HERE regarding the ASA style of subheadings. 9. Peer Review: Bring a hard copy of the draft to the scheduled peer review day. 10. Revisions: At this stage, you may review the thesis statement and revise it as needed. Sometimes, as you write, the main focus shifts, and if that happens, it is important that you revise the thesis statement to be consistent with the body. Make sure you proofread carefully and revise the paper using the “Checklist for Writing” before submission. Asking someone else to proofread for you would be helpful. 11. Submit: Final draft will be uploaded on Canvas. When submitting your paper, make sure it is in either Microsoft Word document or PDF. Also, make sure you submit the completed version of “Checklist for Writing” with your paper. https://guides.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/c.php?g=285714&p=1902489#s-lg-box-5819418 https://csus.instructure.com/courses/96876/files/14623945?wrap=1 Critical Autobiography Project: Paper #1 “Race, Ethnicity, Nationality, and/or Immigration and the Self” (5 pages, at least 2 sources, 50 points) Instruction Checklist for Writing (Adopted from Writing for Sociology, Second Edition) Every writing has room for improvement. Each paragraph is organized around a single main point, and includes atopic sentence that states this clearly. You have checked to make sure that each point you have made has been adequately defended, either with an example, a reference to the text, or a few explanatory sentences. You have checked for inconsistencies, gaps, and flaws in your arguments. As part of this, you have considered counter-arguments for each of your points. The conclusion sums up the main points of the paper. The paper is formatted a commonly used font like Time New Roman 12. It is doubled-spaced, with normal margins (1” all around). Introduction
In the golden words of John Dewey, “We do not learn from experience rather we learn from reflecting on the experience”. Indeed, self-reflection can enable one to recognize the progress one makes in life, whilst allowing one to consid
er enhancements one can make in the future. By the virtue of this assignment, I have got this opportunity to perform a critical analysis of myself along with an application of fundamental sociological concepts that are associated with ethnicity, race, immigration, and nationality. Therefore, I feel blessed to have this opportunity that urges me to reflect on the social factors that shaped my behavior and actions.
Race and Ethnicity
I am a 22-year-old Asian-American who plays multiple roles in life - I am a student, a son, a brother, and a hip-hop dancer. I am passionate about dance and interested in hip-hop music for a very long time. This is the most authentic form of action by the virtue of which I can showcase my love for exercise and life in general by implementing hip-hop dance. This interest has pulled me into the dance community that offers me, and many students like me to express our personalities as well as emotions. Dance especially hip-hop allows us to appreciate simple things in life and urges us to overcome challenges. As an immigrant myself, I comprehend the struggles, difficulties, and hardships that are part and parcel of living in America today. There are many barriers I faced while establishing my identity both at the career level and in my personal life. For instance, there were numerous situations where I felt unwelcome and excluded from the group. I also faced denial, then in anticipation to find out I wasn’t accepted into my aspiration colleges. Dealing with rejection can be really difficult however it shouldn’t stop us (Yan, M. C., 2005). Something that keeps me moving ahead in life is the fact that if I keep trying, I have a chance to get selected one day. The problem is how people see us, all those who have immigrated very differently. I asked my father, I have been Asian all my life, but it’s only now that people notice. No offense to my friends who are very inclusive, but the majority of society fails to embrace the diversity which prevails in society. There is still a clear divide amongst people which is reflected in their behavior and mindset. Therefore, I have faced seclusion in certain forms and expressions which might be even more prominent in other sections of society. I consider myself blessed that I could connect with my passion early on in my life. With music and its beats, my actions automatically get synced and actions result in dance (Thier, M., 2013). This has helped me recover...
