Cells are the building blocks of life and are the smallest structural and functional unit of all living organisms. They are responsible for performing essential functions such as metabolism, protein synthesis, and cell division. Understanding the structure and function of cells is crucial for advancing our knowle
dge in various fields of biology, including genetics, immunology, and medicine (Sundd et al., 2019).
Cells come in various shapes and sizes, and their structure can vary depending on their function and the organism they belong to. However, every cell shares certain basic attributes, such as a cytoplasm, cell membrane, and nucleus. The cell membrane serves as a barrier to govern the substances movement in and out of a cell, while the cytoplasm contains all the cellular components necessary for the cell's metabolic processes. The nucleus contains the genetic material of the cell and is responsible for regulating gene expression (van Zelm et al., 2020).
This essay will explore the structure and function of cells, including their transport mechanisms and the diseases that can affect them. It will also provide a labeled cell diagram to aid in understanding the different parts of a cell.
Cell Structure
Cells are composed of different parts that work together to carry out various functions. These parts are categorized into: the cytoplasmic components and the organelles.
The cytoplasmic components of a cell include the cytosol, the fluid surrounding the organelles. The cytoskeleton provides structural support to the cell. The cytoskeleton comprises protein fibers that help keep the shape of the cell and help it move (Vigano et al., 2019).
The organelles of a cell are specialized structures that perform specific functions. The most critical organelles in a eukaryotic cell are the mitochondria, nucleus, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, cytoskeleton, and ribosomes. The cell membrane is the outermost layer of the cell and is comprised of a phospholipid bilayer that separates the cell from its surroundings. It is selectively permeable, enabling some substances to pass while blocking others (Shimotohno et al., 2021).
The nucleus serves as the control center of a cell and contains genetic material. The DNA is organized into structures called chromosomes and is responsible for regulating the cell's activities, including cell division. Mitochondria are responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP through cellular respiration. They have their own DNA and are believed to have evolved from an ancient symbiotic relationship between a bacterium and a eukaryotic cell (Shahryari et al., 2019).
The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranous sacs and tubes involved in lipid and protein synthesis. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is covered with ribosomes. It is concerned with protein synthesis. However, the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is concerned with detoxification and lipid synthesis The Golgi apparatus is responsible for processing, modifying, and sorting lipids and proteins synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum before they are sent to their final destinations within the cell or outside of it (Hira et al., 2020).
