To educate readers about how stereotypes are harmful and how they can dehumanize or make it difficult for others to see the inherent dignity and humanity of individuals.




Some questions to consider as you brainstorm and write:



  • What are some of the stereotypes about you?

  • What are some of the misconceptions that people have about you?

  • Explain why the typical stereotype is harmful.



In two to three (typed and double spaced pages) explain why the stereotype represents an aspect of your identity in an inaccurate way and educate your readers about the reality of your experience.

  1. You can share some anecdotes (brief personal stories) to illustrate/demonstrate the stereotype.

Introduction
I am a woman of colour with three children and all my life I have been accustomed to various stereotypes and constant scrutiny of people. B
efore I reflect on my experience, it is important to comprehend what is stereotypes? Well, stereotype is over-generalised opinion about a person, thing or place. I think it’s a common misconception associated with the characteristics of group or for an individual. Essentially, stereotyping can be very harmful since it shapes the perception of ourselves and people who surround us. As one start generalising by stereotypes, they by default attach them to individual and overlook their merits. Furthermore, stereotypes can create low esteem, develop paths for self-doubts and propel many turbulences with identity. For example, when one is stereotyped over and over again, then one begins to internalise those negative characteristics related with the stereotypes thereby making it as self-fulfilled prophecies.
Reflection and Personal Experiences
I for that matter is not an exception and have faced many stereotypes. I have gone through the trials of being judged for my background, gender and ethnicity. Being an African woman with three children it was very difficult for other to accept me for my intellect and merit. Rather I was always been stereotyped as “Angry Black Women”. Furthermore, I have been misconceived because of things that interest me and the way I communicate about them. There are people who outrightly label me that “She is bitter old lady” or “She yells”...
