Introduction
Lately cannabis has been gaining immense popularity for its medical benefits.
It is being recommended by the private practioners, doctors, physicians and specially experts of holistic medicine. History reveals that the use of marijuana has been wide spread. It has been in use to change mood and perception, to ease physical pain, to alter consciousness and to generally affect the behavior (Roth, 2008). Marijuana is the second most frequently used among all the recreational drugs after alcohol. It has been used throughout history as a gateway to thought provoking and mystical experiences, as a spiritual guide to attain moksha or nirvana. All over the world marijuana has made its place among the different cultures. From the South American mine workers using it to ease their work load to the African natives using it to relieve their pain, marijuana has been widely accepted into the cultures and it spread its roots deep into their narratives (The Medical Marijuana Guide, 2009).
Narration
Medical marijuana is extracted from dried and cut leaves of the two plants species named the cannabis sativa or the cannabis indica. Each variant is different with its own medicinal properties. The active ingredient in both is the compound known as delta tetrahydrocannibinol. In many countries marijuana is not legal although many are advocating to giving it a legal status. The main reason is that marijuana is much safer compared to the legal options of alcohol or nicotine. Countries like Netherlands, Canada, Peru and Russia have all identified the medical aspects of marijuana and have legalized its use yet the country famous for marketing marijuana, Jamaica has promptly discriminated its use among the citizens.
