This assignment requires that you write a letter to either a Texas state legislative leader (elected Texas state senator or representative), member of the plural executive, or local elected official leader (county or local level) that conveys and analyzes your concerns about an issue, policy or the political culture in the State of Texas, a county in Texas or a local community in Texas. Make sure you first identify who holds the elected position so you may focus the letter to that elected official. Abortion is not one.


Letter Organization:



  1. Start out by putting the date on the letter.

  2. Then put the address of your selected leader in Texas leader.

  3. Start the letter with the proper salutation, for example: Dear Senator (Last Name) or Representative (Last name) or Honorable Judge, Mayor, etc. (name).

  4. Make sure to clearly state the reason for your concern in your letter.

  5. Make sure that you fulfill the criteria listed at the beginning of this handout.

  6. Make sure to point out your relationship to the elected official, for example, if you are their constituent.

  7. At the end of the letter, place your name, signature and address.



Format:



  1. 12-point

  2. Times New Roman

  3. Single spaced

  4. Minimum 1000 words, maximum 1100 words

  5. At the bottom of your letter you should include your name and city.

Concern: the recent ban on abortion law in the state of Texas
    Dear Senator, I am a fellow citizen of this state and the United States of America and I am here to talk about a recent concern about the political culture of the state that I believe you need to take into consideration. I wish to inform you that the abortion law that has permitted abortion to be done within six weeks have been quite injustice to the pregnant women who have no recollection of being pregnant as early as six weeks. Therefore, the bill needs to be reconsidered for the future and security of the women and their health issues. I would like to draw your concern over the women who are not capable enough to carry a child because of health issues. If the pregnancy is not detected or the pregnancy is causing harm to the body, it needs to be eradicated. But the six weeks policy of abortion ban will deprive a person to have access to the medical treatment and abortion that should be her right. In terms of human rights, as it already has been mentioned in the bill, the rights of the unborn child are also considered as important. Therefore, it is important to consider the rights of the women who would choose to live over some serious medical condition that could take her to the steps of death.
Senator, I would like to tell you to draw reference from the past cases of abortion ban and how it has reflected on the various other cases from the past.
