QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Response One
Doing the learning journal brought new knowledge and experience about the concept of systems and how it is understood in the modern context. In fact, systems thinking is often confused with the various organizational systems that existed at social, economical and political level. There are two distinctive aspects of systems thinking which should be examined from two different approaches. There used to be one systems approach at Socratic period, roughly around 6th BC when ethical, social and political doctrines of living were idealized by some inte
llectual thinkers. The openness of systems thinking simply was not present. The same concept continued in the medieval period in Western part of the world. A class of people which had so called ‘superior knowledge’ of the subject was supposed to deal with the shaping and implementing procedures of systems thinking. Most of the rules in society are seen as an outcome of that process.
However, by writing this reflective journal, I not only cam in close contact with the historical overview of systems thinking, but I realized that the modern state of systems thinking is still in the primitive form. The managerial complexities, inclusion of the organizational culture into ecological sustainability and the participation of the community leadership in making systems thinking as some holistic concept altogether work. I have now a better understanding of this ideology in the light of the fact that systems thinking is not merely associated with the organizational wellbeing; its criteria is spread far and wide into the global communities and until every unit is brought to the degree of active engagement in the process, systems thinking, as a positive concept, cannot give futuristic results. The course learning also helped in shaping this idea for me. It assisted in learning the facts related to systems thinking subject.
Response Two
Business approaches to sustainability are in close connection with the government and civil society’s approaches to it. At first, it is significant to note here that the dynamics of business are changing in the modern world and it is due to the fact that the global crisis is taking shape in the form of climate change and loss of natural resources every year. For example, the fire incidents in the Amazon rainforests have increased by a significant number. The Australian bushfire has forced most of the rare species of plants and animals in various regions of the nation go extinct. The pollution level in some developing nations has crossed the alarming stage due to massive industrial growth and it is affecting not only the nature but also the routine life cycle of human beings. Altogether, a kind of need is felt to change the system in which, the aspects of sustainability in business are perceived at global level.
Moreover, successful operation of business these days also depends over the government’s provisions. Expansion of business is a common phenomenon that is seen in the era of globalization. Therefore, governments of various nations are committed to protect their natural resources through applying sustainable means. Their civil societies are marked by the active participation in the process of preserving nature and its sources. Thus, the approach of sustainability in business stands for operating in business through showing dedication to follow the environmental norms strictly. The organizations of the modern world follow the concept of dedicating their work criteria towards ensuring the achievement of sustainability aspect. At the same time, organizational leadership these days undergoes the concept of good governance, a clear and straightforward concept which means that only by applying sustainable norms in culture, organizational wellbeing can be ensured for a durable period.
Response Three
My behavior has changed to a large extent after learning about the various aspects of sustainability at university. Now, I have come to the ground reality that sustainability is a complete subject in itself. It does not include a fair understanding of the organizational structure and behavior only; there are multiple dimensions of this subject which should be well known. An organization cannot last long, if the sustainability norms are not inherent in its culture. The wellbeing of the organization, on the other hand, depends largely upon the fact that how its leaders approach the standpoints of sustainability. Previously, I had little idea about the inclusion of sustainability in organizations and I used to believe that an organization is made with various departments and units which work together to generate profits. I had either little or no knowledge about how sustainability influences overall culture of the organizations in the modern business world.
By learning about the concept of sustainability now, my approach has been bettered and I can infer that sustainability in organizations not only includes several ingredients of success existing within the organizational structure, but also there are some external factors which function effectively in its success. These factors may include community participation, achievement of goals in following the environmental norms of a particular regions where the operations of the organization are taking place largely as well as the support on behalf of the governmental policies altogether work for achieving the aspect of sustainability in business. Sustainability does not come in parts; it is a full concept which integrates several values form within and outside organizations and to make sure that the business is run well, the internal and external assessment of these values on timely bases is always anticipated on behalf of the top administration of the organization.
