To avoid any opposite circumstance, prevention strategy might be designed which
usually consists of three steps: primary, second
ary and tertiary preventions.
Primary prevention focuses on reduction in the number of new cases (incidence),
Secondary prevention concentrates over lowering the rate of already established cases in the
population (prevalence) whereas; Tertiary prevention tries to alleviate the impact of an adverse
event (Robins & Devant, 1966).
Above concepts could be easily understood via taking following examples:
1. Motor Vehicle Accidents
(i) Primary prevention
Drivers should be induced to wear protective equipments such as; helmet.
(ii) Secondary prevention
Drivers which are at high risk for accidents could be diagnosed via health care
professionals and further, reduction of accident rate via organization of safety promotion
program might be done (Robins & Devant, 1966).
(iii) Tertiary prevention
To provide proper therapy to accident victims.
2. Obesity
(i) Primary prevention
Organization of enlightening programs to educate people about proper health habits and
to promote physical activity (Jemal et al., 2007).
(ii) Secondary prevention
Health checks up in a regular mode, dietary education.
(iii) Tertiary prevention
