As part of this you pinged PC-B’s IP address from PC-A. Eventually this causes ICMP at PC-A to create an ICMP echo request packet which is to be delivered to PC-B. List and briefly describe the detail of IP routing and frame forwarding of the processes that deliver the above ICMP echo request packet to PC-B at the ICMP protocol of PC-B. Address the following points in your explanation: 1) How IP packet is created from ICMP packet at PC-A, i.e., describe the encapsulation of the ICMP payload into an IP packet (indicating values of relevant IP header fields). 2) How IP at PC-A determines whether PC-B is a local or remote destination including any calculations performed. 3) Once the location is determined in (2), a destination MAC address is required to prepare a frame. If PC-B is in remote, which device’s MAC address will be used for encapsulation of IP packet into a frame; mention the IP of that devices? The process of forwarding data packet from one side of the interface to the other side interface is done by performing a process called Network Address Translation (NAT). The device capable of doing so must be able to operate at layer 3 protocols. Usually such processes are carried out by device called routers. Comparing to the switches that operate only at layer 2 protocols, switches cannot do any NAT process hence are not available for inter domain networking.
The process of NAT can be described using a diagram as shown below:
PC-A packet:

Source IP is Server Destination IP is Router
The process starts with packet request by a pc on the internal interface of the router. Here PC-A is on internal side and remote server is on external side. The request from PC-A is destined to remote server. As soon as the packet reaches the router interface, the router traps the packet and analyzes its destination IP. Depending upon the IP being an external IP address, the router replaces the source IP and Port number with one of it's own and forwards the packet towards remote server. The server has no idea about PC-A and it replies to router itself with destination IP of the router and source IP of it's self.
The packet travels and reaches the router. The router has no layer 4 to consume the payload, it has to forward the data packet to relevant PC. So it matches the Source IP of the packet and forwards this to the original sender of the request i.e. PC-A. In this manner one NAT translation is always complemented by a reverse NAT for the response packet. The router has to keep record of all such translations it does when forwarding the traffic to the external interface so that reverse NAT can be performed when data packet returns with a response.
Few things that router stores for each translation are Source IP, Source Port and the Destination IP and its Destination Port. This helps router performs the NAT when data from external side is received for forwarding to the internal side.
