The importance of good interpersonal communication
The word ‘micro-skills’ is used to encompass certain proficiencies for communicating well with others. As stated by Tangney, Boone and Baumeister (2018), professionals ranging from social workers to health professionals are trained to develop communication micro-skills. This would help them gain necessary prowess in fields of counseling treatment as well as other intervention methods. The micro-skills also encompass interviewing proficiency. Among the various forms of communication, interpersonal communication is the most important form. According to Oetzel (2017), interpersonal communication involves the communicating entities sharing the same place, in other words, the communication is a face-to-face communication.
Interpersonal communication is of utmost significance in any communication set-up. As supported by Kourkouta and Papathanasiou (2014), good interpersonal communication skills of an individual guarantee the individual the position of a valuable team player. Whether in the personal or professional domain, sound verbal and nonverbal skills, hearing, manipulating, negotiating, trouble-shooting, analyzing, decision-making and being authoritative are all skills that an individual must master to be able to interact smoothly in different set-ups. As noted by Gilligan et al. (2018), in case of medical professionals, communication micro-skills play a very important role to establish strong communication between the health professionals and the patients. They also underline good communication among the different health professionals, encompassing nurses, doctors and other professionals.
The communication among them is prerequisite for the betterment of the client as well. There are a number of communication micro-skills to be learned. According to Berger (2014), the most primitive of the skills is to have an attending behavior. An attending behavior on the side of the health professional helps to inculcate a sense of interest, support and empathy in the clients. Maintaining proper attending behavior helps to increase the client’s talk time and enhances the quality of healthcare interaction. During communication, maintaining eye contact is a means to express interest in the conversation as well as assertiveness. As mentioned by Cheruvelil et al. (2014), the volume, tone as well as frequency of the voice of the speaker also play a main role in capturing the listener’s attention.
When conversations are done in clear, formal and assertive tone, the seriousness and depth of the topic being discussed is more easily put across. As supported by Afifi (2015), besides these, the emotions of the speaker also get expressed via his tone of speech. Verbal Tracking is also a central part of communication. As observed by Rogers (2015), the continuity and clarity of the communication is better maintained if the speaker is able to draw references from the previously held conversations. For instance, in the health sector, the professionals could discuss a patient by drawing references from the patient’s testimony. Finally, the body language also plays an important role in the conversation as it is a manifestation of the interest and attention being paid to the speaker. On the other hand, as argued by Gallois and Giles (2015), the speaker’s body language reflects confidence, faith as well as assertiveness in the statements delivered.
