According to Graham & Megarry, (2005), “use of reflection develops practitioners who can cope with change and respond professionally to unpredictable events that present in the workplace” (p.1) hence my reflective writing in both these blogs and developing my portfolio will enable me to be better prepared for the challenges I encounter in my placement. Today I began student placement at Goldfields employment and learning centre neighbourhood house (GELC). It began with an orientation, first I was shown around, and met the staff members. This allowed me to introduce myself and get to know my colleagues, this was important as it made me feel more comfortable in my work environment. I was then asked to review the staff handbook.  The staff handbook details information regarding codes of practice, policies and procedures, record management, and codes of conduct, from this I learned that the committee of management is responsible for ensuring these policies are in place.  Policies are especially important to organisations such as GELC as according to Tyler, (2004) employee compliance with policies is key to successful coordination and functioning within organizations. Through my adherence to GELC’s policies, procedures, and codes of conduct I will ensure my compliance with laws and regulations and have guidelines to follow for decision-making while working on placement. I then met with my supervisor to go over my student learning contract, discussing my goals while on placement and how I could best achieve them. This was very beneficial to me as I am now confident that I will achieve the goals I have set out as my supervisor understands what I am aiming to achieve, and I have his full support. Tuesday 16th February 2021 Was unable to attend placement due to covid 19 restrictions being upgraded to lockdown.   References Graham, G., & Megarry, B. Reflections of Practice Blog Session Two Thursday, 22 April 2021, 11:41 AM by Sarah MC LEAN 23rd February 2021 This week on student placement I met with my supervisor and another staff member to discuss how we could implement a client feedback system to gather data that could be used to create future programs and courses as well as apply for grants to fund such programs. My supervisor also stated that he would like clients to have the opportunity to raise any concerns or issues they had so he could personally address them.  This approach from my supervisor showed me how much he cares about the clients and that he is invested in making GELC the best community centre it can be. I then created feedback forms to collect the information we had discussed. I then gave these to my colleague to look at give some feedback. One of her suggestions was that the gender section should have more options rather than just male and female. I took this feedback on board and changed the forms to include male, female, and other for a more inclusive feedback form.  I again met with my supervisor and discussed the requirements for Australian centre for further education (ACFE) courses. To attain accreditation and funding for training courses, ACFE requires a report to be written at the end of each semester. I created an easy-to-read survey form for students to complete that would gather all the required data. It is important to attain this accreditation as the funding granted allows the organisation to charge a minimal fee to clients. Hence enabling low socioeconomic community members to participate and further their education. (Australian Centre of Further Education, 2021). My work this week has given me a real-world experience of how GELC implements its underlying principle of helping people to better themselves by learning new skills. In session two of the online supervision class, there was a discussion about Clinical Writing and Case Notes. As I am not seeing clients and hence not writing case notes the ideas were new to me, however, through the activity's I learnt structured note Formats, to choose words carefully and omit needless ones, know my audience and write clearly. Most importantly I understand how to simplify my writing but not my clients. 2nd March 2021 This week in my placement organisation I spent time researching food insecurity rates in the local Maryborough area. Maryborough is a low socioeconomic town and through my research, I discovered that the food insecurity rates are among the highest in the state with 1 in 7 households in the central goldfields shire being food insecure that is they do not have enough to eat (Roffey & Harvey, 2019). I did further research on the local homeless population and according to the Census of Population and Housing (2016), central goldfields shire is listed as having 35 homeless. However, there are nearly 4 times more people in Central Goldfields whose residence is a caravan, cabin, or improvised home in proportion to population, compared to the rest of Victoria (Shannon, 2020). I then used this research to look through the available grants on thegrantshub.com.au and communitygrants.gov.au to find possible funding for programs that can support the venerable people of the local community.  This has given me valuable experience in applying my research skills to a real-world setting.
