DO Bronfenbrenner Independent Study Independent Work on Bronfenbrenner You are to independently work on understanding the cognitive theorists. Please follow the directions below and submit your work electronically as an attached Word document by the due date. You are not to simply copy words from the text. Everything you write must be in your own words and not taken from this or any other text. Make sure to read, listen and watch all the supporting materials. Hi. Here we discuss the contributions of Bronfenbrenner. I would like you to read about him in the many pages he appears in our textbook and then click on the link in the READ section. One reading/article is written by him. This is the reading of a primary text and not a secondary text or someone who is restating his theories. (Bronfenbrenner’s article is the primary text. Reading about his work in our textbook would be the secondary text.) Please also LISTEN and WATCH the links that show how all the levels affect individuals. These materials will be used to answer the Independent Study. Bronfenbrenner is a contemporary who believed that in order to truly understanding humans, we cannot simply look at one dimension. For example, sometimes we hear teachers saying, "Parents do not get involved in their children's schooling because they don't care." Bronfenbrenner believed (and rightly so) that such statements were simplistic and did not take a broad view of what could be happening within families, their communities and the society as a whole. For example, my parents believed schooling was the most important part of my development and yet they never attended a parent/teacher meeting. This was not because they did not care. This was because: 1) they were working during the times when the school meetings were scheduled and their bosses would not let them leave; 2) they did not completely talk or understand English so they felt like coming to school would embarrass me and that they would not fully understand what the teacher would be saying; and 3) they were immigrants who deferred to more educated people than they were ("The teachers and principals are the ones who are educated so naturally they would know more about how to educate my child and naturally they would strive for her best interests. What can we contribute?") These are also the reasons many immigrant, racial/ethnically diverse and low income families hesitate to involve themselves in their child's schooling. The issues are complicated and varied. They are multidimensional, complicated and influence each other. This is what Bronfenbrenner is trying to show in his theory and model. Questions: 1) Many people believe that this theory is like an onion with multiple layers that are all essential in building and influencing the individual. a) In your own life, which levels do you believe have been most influential in your development of the individual? b) Please give the name of the level/s and describe/define the level/s. c) Give real life examples to support your comments. (This could also be from your own life or anything else that you see happening in society.) d) Use Bronfenbrenner’s ideas/theories to help understand how/why this has influenced you. 2) Watch the WATCH: School Inequality. Trading Schools video. Both students from more resourced communities and those from less resourced communities are surprised at each other’s schools. a) When watching the more resources schools, please describe what influences such schools have and how these impact the students attending these highly resourced schools. b) In order to help students who attend less resourced school, which Bronfenbrennerian level do you think would have the most impact to best improve conditions for the students. c) Please name the level and define it. d) Next, give examples/specifics of what you would do/change/improve in that level and e) why doing this would improve things for the school and/or students. 3) Watch the WATCH: School Inequality. Social Conflict Theory video. This video describes how social conflict theory and social capital influence education and students. It describes how Bronfenbrenner’s multiple layers and chronosystem affect large groups of students. a) Please define what you think social conflict theory means in your own words. b) Next, please define what you think social capital means in your own words. c) Now, use an example from the video which you think express how capital and social conflict theory influences education and life outcomes of students. 4) Listen to LISTEN. Deferred Action Roommates. This audio clip shares the story of two of Latinx students who are experiencing documentation issues as one is considering whether to apply for DACA. This is an older audio recording but it is essential that we listen to it today. This is interesting to listen to now as many of the concerns and hesitation that this student feels about registering for the DACA program are manifesting in reality today. a) Please state with which of the two roommates are you mostly likely to agree and explain in detail why you think this way. b) Now apply Bronfenbrenner to understanding this conversation. Which level do you think is most influential to the students and why? c) Today, what could you do to assist with this documentation issue/debate and on which Bronfenbrennerian level would this help be placed?

Part 1
Question 1
Accord
ing to the psychological development process that is included by Erikson all the stages of that development are presented as against each other because, Erikson thinks that within all stages of the psychological development people taught different things (Knight, 2017). All the learning that is gathered from the different stages of psychological development is helping to take effective action in any situation of life that one can face in terms of leading their daily lives.
Within all the eight stages of Erikson, conflict is playing one of the pivotal roles. Erikson in all the stages of psychological development serves effective impact within the process of conflict. The process of conflict with each of the stages can help one to involve successful development in their psychological behaviours (Cherry, 2018). Not only that based on the involvement of conflicts within individual stages one person who is trying to take psychological development in their life cycle can achieve their success in life.
Question 2
The right stages that are associated with the psychological development net of Erikson are such as trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus confusion. Other stages are associated with the psychological development stages of Erikson are intimacy versus isolation, generatively versus stagnation and integrity versus despair. Within the school days, identity versus confusion can be proven as the most effective one. This stage is performing an important role in terms of the making of personal identity of one person within school days.
In this stage, one person can take proper encouragement based on personal exploration and that will help in the emergence of strong feelings and independence in life (Syed & McLean, 2017). In the school days, children explore their independence and for this, there is the development of self among the children. In that respect, the fifth stage of Erikson is serving effective encouragement to the children or school students to make their self-realisation. The self-realisation of the students can help them to take proper understanding regarding their beliefs and this process helps in their future life.
Question 3
Through the overview of all the right stages of the psychological development process of Erikson, it can be mentioned that within my adult age I would like to experience the sixth stage that is the intimacy versus isolation. This stage is playing a vital role in terms of developing the close and committed relationship of one person with the others. Therefore, in the case of the successful ending of this stage, one can experience safe and secure relationship within their personal and professional life (McLean & Syed, 2015). According to Erikson, there is the requirement of involving the personal identity of one person to lead a successful life. This sixth stage of Erikson can help one person to serve proper shape to the personal life of that person through the involvement of psychological development.
