SSC101/403 Psychology of EmotionAssessment 4 Emotion Record Sheet Emotion: Anger You are encouraged to record three to five situations where your chosen emotion is present. Situation What happened? Where? When? Who with? Intensity of the emotion (0 – 10) Somatic sensations What did you notice in your body? Where did you feel it? How did you want to cope with or manage this emotion? Did this help or would you have preferred to cope differently? Thoughts that were associated with the emotion What did you say to yourself when this emotion showed up? Behaviours that were associated with the emotion What did you do when the emotion was present and you had those thoughts? The first situation was at my work place where I was serving to the customer. She just had coffee and I took the order. That was the reason I was very sure that she just had coffee. So after I served her the coffee she was like I am having the meal as well and I was like sorry you did not order a meal. She was angry on me. 7-8 I was right from my point of view. I was feeling angry as well. I was feeling heat in my whole body and I got a headache. Well, in this case because I was right, so I think that the front person should be sorry. Because if I was on her place definitely I would double check like what I ordered? Because I am working in hospitality so you really cannot say anything to customer unless its illegal or something like that. So I just said to myself calm down and let it be. I just walked away and told the other staff to serve her because I was so depressed and then I had cold water and sat for 2 minutes. Second situation was at my home where my sister got angry on her son. So my nephew was watching something on you tube on his ipad. He was watching the videos from last half an hour and his mom said that just turn off it and put away because you already watched enough for the day. He did not listen to her. She was like I am telling you last time just put that away. He was still watching the videos. She just came and took the ipad away. I could see the anger on her face. 6 My heartbeat was fast when she came and when I look at her face her face was red. Well, I think that she was right or bit wrong as well. What she should do instead of getting angry, she should just come in and sit with her kid and talk. This makes a lot of changes in your relationship with a child. Actually I was blank at that time and I did not think anything. But after few minutes I just thought may be she did right but not 100%. I was calm and I did not say anything. Third situation was where I got angry at my brother. So I just called my brother one day. Actually he had the exams last month he got the results just a week ago. I just asked him the results and he told me that he failed on subject. I was over angry on him which I should not. 7 I was depressed and I felt my head is getting so heavy. Well, after I hanged up the call I just realized that instead of angry words, I could say some words with sympathy or motivation. Well, after I hanged up the call I just thought that I failed the subject as well. What about me? Nobody told me anything then why I reacted that much. I was so angry and I told him so many things which he did not even know. As you record instances of your chosen emotion: · Consider the impact you (or your behaviour) may have on others in these moments · Notice as well how others may be experiencing and responding to the same emotion This will be useful for the reflective journal element of the assessment. SSC101/403 Psychology of EmotionAssessment 4 Emotion Record Sheet Emotion: happiness You are encouraged to record three to five situations where your chosen emotion is present. So the situation was that I got a gift for my nephew which was a spider-man t-shirt. He just loves spider man and he always like I want this. So finally he got it. He could not describe his happiness in words when he got it. He had a big smile on his face and he hugged me. 8-9 I was feeling happy as well and I was feeling something good in my heart. Happiness is something which you cannot describe in words. In the scenario of dealing differently, I guess in this situation I could not cope better than this. I was just feeling happy and glad. My nephew said thank you to me and I hugged him. This situation matters a lot for me as it was kind of appreciation for my work. The customer appreciated my coffee and he said this is the best coffee I have ever had. I felt happy because this means a lot for me. 8 Everyone could see the big smile on my face as I was so happy and feeling proud. There were nothing like that, I could cope differently. I said to myself that you can do better and be confident. I was feeling more confident. This situation told me that it is not must that if you get the gifts or money then you will be happy. So the situation was that I went to city with my friend and what I saw that a man was singing a song on the street with a musical instrument and some people were dancing. I could see the happiness in that man and in those people. So according to me you can find the happiness in little things if you want to be happy. 7-8 I felt about that man who was singing. I was thinking that definitely he has not any job that is why he is singing here and may be I could be wrong. But still he is happy whatever he has. He was smiling and it seemed like he has no complains at all from his life. I was feeling kind of sympathy as well on that man. Well, I put some money in that bowl which was placed in front of him and I appreciated his singing and the happiness he was giving to others. Well, I just learnt one thing that the life you have is great. May be there are thousands of people who is praying to get the life like you. So be happy in your life with whatever you have. I enjoyed that environment for 10-15 minutes. Basically, I learnt the basic and one of the most important rule of happiness. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ON ANGER AND HAPPINESS
Journey of Emotions during this Semester
A human is human when it shows emotions. Emotions differentiates humans from the lifeless machinery. Our expression of emotions is a proof of what
we feel about the situation. Every day, we all go through series of emotions depending upon the situation. We feel happy while watching the rising sun, felt sad when late for work or feel angry when our work is not done. It is not as if we feel one emotion at a time we can feel more than one emotion at a time.
For example, when we lost someone close, we feel angry, frustrated, helpless and sad at a time. Human brain is complex in nature; similarly, we are complex in expressing emotions. We have complexity of showing combination of emotions in a situation. As suggested by Pintar Breen, Tamis-LeMonda, and Kahana-Kalman (2018), emotions can be defined as the feelings, which an individual experienced in the situation. There are many kinds of emotions, which an individual experienced.
Anger, happiness, sadness, fear, surprise and disgust are the six basic emotions, which are very frequent in our life. Experiencing of emotions work very uniquely in every individual’s life. As suggested by Symington (2018), expressing the type of emotion in a situation varies from person to person. For example, the first reaction to listening to the news of death of closed ones can be varied, some feel sad, some feel anger and some feel frustrated.
This semester, I got the chance to observe the emotions and its functionality. How one can experience emotion, it can be done either by observing others or experience at their own. I had focused on the two very common emotions this semester to observe, analyze and understand. These two emotions were anger and happiness. I record the situations when I had observed anger or happiness in a situation.
I had observed people surrounding me and myself to relate impact of the emotions on others. The results I had come across was very remarkable. It had never come occurred to me, how emotions of others can influence us. As suggested by Ekman (2016), anger and happiness are the two strongest emotions, which humans observed. Both these emotions can influence others and trigger the emotions of others irrespective of them to be participants in the situation.
For example, one day when I was sitting at the home, I observed anger in my sister. She asked my nephew to turn off the video, which he was watching on his iPad for past half an hour. Despite of my sister asking him to close the video several times, he refused to notice and keep watching. This makes my sister full of anger; she with anger came to my nephew and snatched the iPad away from him.
When I saw her full of anger, my heartbeat raised high. She might be right being angry on his son but she can use the other approach also to handle the situation. Instead of getting angry on her son, she could have calmly made him understand about the behavior. Although, I was highly affected by her anger and all my thoughts are vanished from my mind, yet I choose to remain calm and away from the situation.
Similarly, happiness also made strong appearance in the surrounding despite the reason for...
