Due Monday, September 22, 2008 Essay 2 Assignment - Informative RENG 92 L. Pope Directions: Respond to the following writing prompt in a multi-paragraph (approximately 500 – 600 word) typed essay. Keep in mind that evidence, facts, examples, observations, and details strengthen your essay. Question (prompt): People usually have one or more activities that they benefit from and/or enjoy. For example, a person might benefit from jogging because it keeps him healthy by exercising the heart, building physical endurance, and rejuvenating energy. By the same token, another individual might enjoy creating artwork because it allows her to express herself, develop a talent, and earn a small income. Yet and still, another person may take enjoy volunteering because it gives him a sense of pride, allows him to use his talents to help others, and occupies his time so he will not become bored after retirement. Other activities may include cooking, singing, playing an instrument, playing a sport, sewing, writing, traveling, etc. Now, think about an activity you benefit from and/or enjoy. Next, write an essay where you first state the activity (in the thesis statement), and then discuss three aspects of the activity that illustrate/ explain why you benefit from it and/or enjoy it (supporting paragraphs). Your own thesis statement Sample Essay Outline Title of your essay: The Dancer in Me! 1st paragraph – Introduction (including the thesis statement)  2nd paragraph – 1st supporting Paragraph – encourages creativity 3rd paragraph – 2nd supporting Paragraph – accomplishes my daily exercise goal 4th paragraph – 3rd supporting Paragraph – inspires a sense of freedom 5th paragraph – Conclusion Writing Specifications: · The Thesis statement must be underlined, highlighted or bold. · The Topic sentence for each supporting paragraph must be underlined, highlighted or bold. · Length – 500 – 600 words (approximately 5 paragraphs) · Use MLA Formatting – (See the MLA information located under the COURSE CONTENT link in Blackboard) -use appropriate heading -indent/ TAB five spaces at the beginning of each paragraph -use a 12 point font -use Times New Roman -use double spacing -include in-text citations and a Works Cited page, as the last page of the essay, (if you use any information that must be documented) - etc. Sources/ Research: There is no research requirement for this essay. However, in the event that you use any sources, it is imperative that you include in-text citation and a Works Cited page. The Guide to Plagiarism is attached in your course syllabus. In addition, MLA format will be the documentation style preference for RENG 092. Evaluation: You must have a clearly stated and identifiable thesis statement and supporting evidence/ examples in you supporting paragraphs. In addition, an introduction, body, and conclusion are mandatory. Keep in mind that evidence, facts, examples, observations, and details strengthen your essay. A good response will demonstrate an ability to articulate a clear position on the assigned topic, organize information, sustain a discussion for several paragraphs, develop your premises, support claims with evidence, and express ideas clearly. In the end, having written at least two drafts, you should submit a well written and polished essay. I will evaluate the content, organization, style/ expression, grammar/ mechanics (including language usage), and punctuation of your essay.
