Thermal conductivity: The heat flow Q due to conduction across a rectangular sheet of insulating material can be calculated using
Here Q is measured in watts per square meter, d is the thickness of the insulating material in meters, t1 is the temperature in degrees Celsius of the warm side of the insulating material, t2 is the temperature of the cold side, and k is the coefficient of thermal conductivity, which is measured experimentally for different insulating materials. For glass, the coefficient of thermal conductivity is 0.85. Suppose the temperature inside a home is 24 degrees Celsius (about 75 degrees Fahrenheit) and the temperature outside is 5 degrees Celsius (about 41 degrees Fahrenheit; see Figure 1.6).
a. What is the heat flow through a glass window that is 0.007 meter (about one-quarter of an inch) thick?
b. The total heat loss due to conduction is the product of the heat flow with the area of the insulating material. In the situation of part a, what is the total heat loss due to conduction if the window has an area of 2.5 square meters?
