There was a renewed cultural interaction and exchange in the post-Medieval world, spurred in part by the ‘Age of Exploration,’ Colonialism, and improved means of travel. Based on the material that we have studied since the Midterm, discuss the way that artworks and artists have been inspired by different cultures and artistic traditions, addressing whether you view these instances as forms of cultural appreciation (i.e. using elements of another society in a respectful way, honoring their origin and valuing their tradition) or cultural appropriation (i.e. unacknowledging or inappropriately adopting elements from outside/minority cultures without understanding or respecting the original culture or context). In addition, you should also address what about the historical and cultural context can be lost when an artist does not learn about a work.
Your essay should include:
A minimum of four works of art
At least one of which must be from Native America, Oceania, or Africa
