There has been an increased global interest in germline genome editing, especially the recent controversial and condemned use of CRISPR technology by Chinese scientist He Jiankui to edit genomes to produce what are believed to be the world’s first genetically edited humans. Sending a strong message to the scientific community, the following statement, opposing He’s work was issued by the organsing committee of the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing in Hong Kong on 29 November, 2018:
“We heard an unexpected and deeply disturbing claim that human embryos had been edited and implanted, resulting in a pregnancy and the birth of twins. Even if the modifications are verified, the procedure was irresponsible and failed to conform with international norms."https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-07607-3 Retrieved 15 February 2018.
Using this as a starting point, apply the theories of deontology and utilitarianism to critically examine the ethical issues raised by the scientist’s use of CRISPR germline genome editing to produce humans. You need to read widely and in some depth.
