Assessment 4: Case study analysis (40%) – Due week 12 – 2000 words – choose one essay topic There are two topics in this assignment choose one which you would like to : Option one: Choose two mining projects (managed by different mining companies) and undertake a comparitive analysis of their work with host communities. This analysis must be no more than 2000 words in length (excluding bibliography) and may consider the following: · A brief description of the mining projects you are analyzing and the companies managing those projects. Consider for example the size of the project investment and size (market capitalisation) of the company managing the project · A brief description of the host communities associated with the mining project. · The nature of the relationship between the company and host communities including an overview of key issues between the companies and their host communities. Has there been any community outrage for example. · A description of the community projects that the companies are implementing, the level of involvement of the host communities and the findings of evaluations focused on the community projects. · An outline of how the companies structure their community relations effort. Do they have executive level staff with community engagement / development responsibilities, is there a community relations team in place, what role does the company board of directors play? Is there a community relations policy in place and / or management system? · How do the companies report on community relations activities. Do they have an external advisory panel in place? It is a critical component of this analysis that you compare the two mining projects regarding their community relations activities and outline why you think their approaches are similar or different. The purpose of this assessment is for you to explore how mining companies differ in their approach to community relations, including their internal management structures, and why this is the case. Much of this information can be sourced from company websites, sustainability and annual reports however it is expected that you explore other texts to inform your analysis and provide a bibliography. Option two : Choose two local governments and undertake a comparitive analysis of their work with community. This analysis must be no more than 2000 words in length (excluding bibliography) and may consider the following: · A brief description of the approach adopted by each local government authority (LGA) . Ie. consider the size of the budget the local government commits to work with the community, staff, what kind of work they do with community. · A brief description of the local community. · The nature of the relationship between the community and local government. Eg. has there been any community outrage recently. · A description of the community projects that the LGA are implementing, the level of involvement of community and any findings of evaluations focused on the community projects. · An outline of how the companies structure their staffing. Much of this information can be sourced from LGA websites, community strategic plans, sustainability and annual reports. Introduction
    Coal mines are located in almost every state of Australia. Mining activity in Australia is carried mainly in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Several well known companies undertake these mining activities in the area considering not only their own profits but also the benefit of the communities living in these regions. This report shall present a comparative analysis of the Cameby Downs Coal Mine located in Darling Downs, Queensland and Blair Athol Coal Mines located in Bowen Basin of Central Queensland. Cameby Downs Coal Mines is managed and run by Yancoal and Blair Athol Coal Mines is managed and run by TerraCom.
Description of Cameby Downs Coal Mine and Blair Athol Coal Mine
    Cameby Downs Coal Mine is a coal mine located on the Darling Downs in Queensland Australia. This coal mine is owned by Yancoal Australia and was opened in the year 2010. The mining activities here have a production capability of 2 million tons of coal every year. This mine is a open cut operation. This mine produces low ash export thermal coal and is connected to the port of Brisbane. The mine complex is located on Warrego Highway, 16 km in the northeast direction of the Township of Miles and 30km northwest to the Township of Chinchilla. As per the information gained through the official website of Yancoal, the preparation plant and the associated infrastructure of the mining plant were completed in the year 2010. The mining location has the potential to contain at least a 1.0 billion tonnes of coal.
    Blair Athol Coal Mine is located in Bowen Basin of Central Queensland in Australia. It is located on the former side of the Blair Athol Township. It was a project of New Emerald coal acquired in the year 2013. The mine has 195 million tonnes reserves of coking coal. The mine is capable of producing 12.9 million tonnes of coal every year. The mine has restarted under the new ownership of TerraCom in the year 2017. The major product of the mine includes coking coal. This mine is said to be one of the largest mines in Asia and the world with sufficient coal reserves. The company TerraCom has a large number of assets and is one of the largest companies in the region of Queensland undertaking mining activities. The company paid the Queensland government a huge sum of $80 million for the purpose of rehabilitation (Australian mining, 2019).
Description of the host communities
    Darling Downs, the region where the Cameby coal mines is located is mainly farming and mining region in the southern Queensland area of Australia. The region has an approximate population of about 241,537 people and covers an area of 77,388.7 km^2. Over 90% of the area is covered by mining exploration leases. Communities living in the region include indigenous population as well as the aboriginals. These communities are mainly involved in two occupations namely agriculture and mining. Yancoal is very well familiar with the fact that maintaining good community relations is important for the development of the business (Hedin and Ranängen, 2017).
Another mining area of Australia where the Blair Athol coal mine is located is Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. This is a major region producing coal and has been identified as one of the areas around the globe with largest deposits of bituminous coal. The area covered by this region is 60,000 square kilometers and has a population of about 42,000 people who are indigenous as well as aboriginals living in this region. Mining has been a major industry in the region employing a large number of regional populations.
Relationship between companies and their host communities
    The Cameby Downs mines operate under EA EPML00900113 and employs about 140 persons. The mining activities undertaken by Yancoal Australia in this region are as per the environmental laws of the Regional Council government. The company has also tried to maintain good public relations with the local communities living in the region.
