Describe the policy
Criminal policy is understood as framework of rules and regulations designed for those who have committed crimes. It is formulated under the regime of criminal justice system where series of government agencies and institutions acting with the overall aim and purpose of identifying, catching and trapping unlawful individuals and inflicting some form of punishment on them. There are some other goals of criminal justice policy including rehabilitation of offenders, providing moral support for victims, preventing occurrence of other crimes, etc. In the underlying piece of work, a criminal justice policy which needs to be implemented is discussed, but not personally agreed with. The policy selected for discussion purpose is Drug Abuse in the United States, on which US government has adopted a flexible criteria or approach for reducing imprisonment of drug adductors, or else, providing them with some form of relief and relaxation (Drug Abuse in the United States, 2019).
Personal disagreement with the policy
Drug Abuse is a predominantly adopted criminal justice policy in US with the purpose of reducing strain on healthcare system, criminal justice system and the economy. This criminal justice policy is aimed at developing necessary laws for controlling distribution and use of both prescribed and illicit drugs. The policy has classified the drugs as per their potential for abuse, legalisation or decriminalisation. In the US, drug abuse policy has undergone several changes for preventing drug abuse and educating public about the risks and dangers of drug use and sales (Drug Policy in America, 2019).
At the time of formulation of drug abuse policy in 1980s, US have adopted a hard-line war on the use of drugs in the country. The users were awarded with heavy imprisonment and monetary punishments. However, public’s opinion on the drug use and consumption has changed over the years, and, they started perceiving or using drugs as a regular smoking habit.
