Person-Situation Interaction
Six ways in which a person and the situation interact to shape a person's goals, thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors are:
Different persons respond differently to the same situation: Seeing an accident on the
road, different persons react differently. For example, one person may try to personally help the
persons; another person may just ignore the whole scenario and move on or a third person may
not directly help the casualties herself but may call the ambulance and police to the situation
before moving on. Different persons respond differently to the same situation of a road accident.
These varying reactions are caused by several things such as the stimulus, our previous
observations of similar situations, what we have been taught since childhood and even our
biological DNA (some behavior and feeling traits may run in the family, like depression) (Roach,
2009). Working in such situations is difficult for any manager. Managers need to understand the
thought processes of the employees and should try to act accordingly in different situations. To
effectively handle the situation, the managers have to build a long term relation with the
employees to understand their individual behaviors.
Situations choose the person: So many girls want to be a part of the cheer leading team
of their school, however only a few get to be on that team. This shows that situations choose the
