There are limits. Mrs. Clinton has a token economy in her fourth-grade class. Students can both earn points and lose them (responsecost). After 2 weeks, she needs to adjust for the amount of carryover points the students can keep and use. She sets a ceiling on the number of points an individual student can earn in any given week not to exceed 5% in excess of the most “expensive” item on the reinforcer menu. For the next week, students earn points within this new limited number of points available while continuing to lose the usual number of points for misbehavior. By Thursday lunchtime, the students no longer seem to be engaged in their work.
