Strength-based theory
    The theory is consid
ered as the base of the social work. This theory is also known as work-practice theory. As mentioned by Rashid (2015), strength-based theory focuses on the determination of the self. It focuses on the strength of the person. It helps in building of the client based on their strength. It considered client as resilient and resourceful individual especially in the time of the critical situation. This approach focused on the client centered and client led to focus the sets of strengths of the future. As suggested by Bozic, Lawthom, and Murray (2018), put stress on getting people to affect the change in them. According to this theory, change in the individual occur using positivity and affect them. Change is determine based on the reaction of the individual or the way they can take care of their own capacity, rights, quirks, and behavior towards similarities and dignity.
As suggested by Greene (2017), the approach used by strength-based theory is considered one of the most successful because this theory consider client as the agent of the change when they are provided with the environment for controlling change. The approach provided by strength-based theory is majorly dependent on the emotional processing, information processing, and though process of the person. It provides the chance for the two-way communication and thought process to recognize the capacity of the individual for change, analyze the values and gathering of the strength.
As suggested by Rudo-Stern, Mauricio, and Dishion (2019), strength-based theory suggested that people must be given habitable condition for an individual, so that they can see the best in themselves. This is helpful in bringing the values by just being the way they are. These values capitalize their strength and focus must be made on positive characters instead of the negative characteristics. This theory examines both individual and its environment. It also identifies the constrains which holds the individual for developing and acquiring growth in their life.
As suggested by Howe (2017), there are six main standards which helps in identifying the strength-based theory. The standards which are maintained by strength-based theory are assessment of strength, orientation of goals, making meaningful choice, use of different strategy for different situation, resources from the environment, and formation of relationship by inducing hope. In context of orientation of goal, it is necessary for individual to set the goals. In context of assessment of strength, the individual identifies and assesses the strength and inheriting of the resources. In resources from the environment, the available resources are linked with the environment. The resources can be association, individual, group or institution.
In case of using of the different methods for different situations, solution-focused therapy must be used. This therapy guide client to determine its strength and goals. In hope-inducing relationship, strength of the person is used to make the social connections with culture, community, and people. As noted by Jackson, Dillon, Bennett, and Regis (2019), in context of the meaningful choice, every individual is expert about its strength, hopes and resources. The strength-based approach is driven by certain principles like every individual have unique characteristic which is evolved during the journey. Things which receives attention or focus becomes what client strive for become reality. As noted by Coady, and Lehmann (2016), the language used by social worker creates client’s reality. The client accepts the change, life, and ever-evolving world. It supports others as authentically. It builds upon what people know and experience to dream the future. This capacity builds multiple facets and organizations. It is collaborative approach and adaptive in nature.
As noted by Collins (2018), one of the best attributes to the strength-based theory is that it is inclined towards the mutual between client and the practitioner. The relationship established between practitioner and client is completely dependent on the quality of the relationship. It is interesting to know that strength-based approach is used in various fields and...
