This could be a physical space, a digital space, or perhaps something they excel at; a domain of their own. Domains are utilized and have been utilized in one of its varying contexts every single day since the time of the ancient Romans, yet very few persons recognize and appreciate this. Consider the varying degrees that domain encompasses; your career or passion is your domain, the website you purchased is your domain, the home you live in is your domain, the country you live in is considered that governments’ domain. Keeping that in mind, the word domain will be defined, expounded upon, and examined from different perspectives throughout history. In order to fully comprehend a word, the root or foundation must be taken into consideration, and as such the root of the word domain will be our starting point. The word domain comes from the Latin word dominus meaning lord or master and also has roots from the Old French word demeine meaning belonging to a lord. The recognized form today, domain, is the Middle English form of the word and was used to denote heritable or landed property (Oxford English Dictionary) and the definition of the word domain has a far more expansive domain in the English language today in comparison to the past. That being said, the prevailing definition of domain is territory over which dominion is exerted; a meaning that clearly reflects the historic usage of the word. The Encyclopedia Britannica states that “Domain as a legal concept is derived from the dominium of the Roman law, which included the right of property as well as the right of possession or use of the property.” During ancient Roman times when land was conquered, it would be allocated in various ways; some land was made public land for tenants to occupy and pay the state rent, and some was retained for service to the gods and the royal domains (The Encyclopedia Britannnica: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature). Hundreds of years later and this basic concept regarding land is still being used by governments around the world; in the United States for example, land occupied by federal government buildings and facilities and land which title is still retained by the state is referred to as public domain and even if one owns land the state still dictates, to an extent, what said land may be used for. As time and language progressed, the word domain established a space of its own in the world of the Sciences. French physicist Pierre-Ernest Weiss (1865-1940) propositioned the domain theory in 1907 to explain ferromagnetism; this theory as written in Engineering Physics states “a single crystal of ferromagnetic solid compresses a large number of small regions, and each region is spontaneously magnetized to saturation extent called a domain” (Naidu). The size of this domain may vary and when exposed to an external magnetic field, the domain boundaries alter and support other domains positioned in the same direction as the external field. Biology has also adapted the word domain; the term was introduced by Carl R. Woese and his team along with the suggestion of a natural classification system for all life on Earth. Domain is the highest taxonomic rank in the tiered biological classification system, above the kingdom level (Woese CR). The three domains of life are, the Archaea, the Eucarya and the Bacteria; Archaea and Bacteria organisms contain a prokaryotic cell structure while Eucarya organisms are comprised of cells with a nucleus that confines the genetic material from the cytoplasm (Woese CR). The word domain has also left an indelible mark in the topics of Mathematics and Computing, where most persons can associate a definition for the term. By the time children reach high school they will be introduced to domains in Mathematics, and while they may not fully grasp how it works they utilize domains in Computing effortlessly just by browsing the web. The website www.intmath.com, states that “the domain of a function is the complete set of possible values of the independent variable” (Domain and Range). In simpler terms, the set of all potential x-values which will allow the function to operate and yield real y-values. Another accepted meaning in Mathematics is a ring that has an identity element, is commutative under multiplication and has no divisors of zero (Weisstein). Domain as it relates to Computing is generally split into two definitions. A collection of devices and computers on a network that are governed as a unit with common regulations and procedures; for example, all computers in the City Tech domain will have certain websites blocked and some features will be disabled on computers that students use. The other standard definition of domain in plain words is a set of websites on the internet that share the same suffix or group or letters. A websites’ domain name is composed of two elements, before and after “the dot”; before “the dot” is the domain name that is registered and used to provide systems while after “the dot” is known as a “top-level domain” (What Does ICANN Do?). The suffix of a domain or after “the dot” will sometimes reveal the geographic origin or category of organization the website is associated with, for instance, “.gov” is used by government entities and www.google.de is Googles’ German homepage (Evaluating Information - STAAR Method: URL & What it can tell you). Dylan Taylor said “Space is really domain expansion”. Considering all the knowledge presented, it is almost a certainty that in coming decades and centuries domain will continue to expand and evolve into other domains. There may be a day in the not so far future where physical and digital domains become seamlessly integrated and add another dimension to life.
