The values of the RNLI had their strongest resonance among a society with traditional values. There was also a relationship between the RNLI and Britain as a symbol of civilisation, via the Empire, around the world. With the decline of British influence, young people do not identify with this sense of national pride and the RNLI has suffered; it is no longer something younger people feel ‘proud of’.
