The total eradication of some vector- borne diseases by GM mosquitoes brings some added benefits to those who lives are affected as well as public health officials. These diseases have been a scourge to those living or visiting tropical countries. According to WHO, (2017), one African child dies every minute from Malaria a life threatening disease. In 2015 the African region had 90% cases and 92% Malaria deaths. The prospect of total eradication of these diseases by using GM mosquitoes brings hope and economic benefit to those regions affected. Recently, those affected by Zika in particular Brazil had to revisit eradication measures. The use of GM mosquitoes was successful, the Aedes aegypti mosquito population was reduced by up to 90% (Palmer,2015). Nevertheless, opponents of GM mosquitoes are concern about the effect on the environment and the possibility of gene transfer. Also other types of mosquito may move in and fill the void in the ecosystem. Scientist states that these fears are unfounded, since only male GM mosquitoes would be released and only female mosquitoes bite, hence it would be impossible to be bitten by a modified mosquito. Additionally, the selection limiting gene in lab-grown mosquito is only passed on to another organism through sexual reproduction ( Palmer,2015). The word GM augments fear regardless of the end results. Scientific evidence are downplayed and the benefits overshadowed. The use of GM mosquito to eradicate vector- borne diseases ( dengue, malaria, zika and chikunguynya) far outweigh the risk put forward by opponents. The side effects of malaria drugs, the mortality and morbidity from these diseases are far more devastating than the concerns raised. For example, birth defects (microcephaly) from Zika virus has impacted the lives of those affected.
