JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt5vjs21. Harvey Blatt writes about the food industry and what is in the food the American population consumes daily. He touches on topics such as the health of Americans, the food industry and its production and distribution. The contents of this book provide detailed insights on what we ingest living in America and how that affects every single physiological process within us. Seemingly, this might not directly connect to my topic, however food production and where it comes from plays a huge role in what gets into our stomachs. 2. Hoerr, Fogel., “Ecological correlations of dietary food intake and mental health disorders”, Journal of Epidemiology and Global Health (2017) 7, Chicago, IL., Elsevier Ltd., 2016, open access article; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ , 18 December 2016, p.81-89 The paper examines the impact of dietary food intake on people throughout 17 countries. Data from the World Mental Health Survey were presented and used to compare the prevalence of four categories of mental health disorders amongst different populations. Mood disorders, anxiety disorders, impulse control disorders, and substance use disorders were observed and associated to country’s sugar/sweetener and fish/seafood supply using the Spearman rank correlation. According to the data gathered, sugar and sweetener being present in the diet is highly associated with all four disorders mentioned above. This source is helpful, because it provides data on how the food we eat today, impacts our health tomorrow. 3. Parletta, Natalie., “Can diet and nutrition affect our learning, behavior and mental health?”, NUTRIDATE (2013), Australia, Fitzroy Warringal Publications 2013, University of South Australia Dr. Natalle Parletta, a nutritionist and dietitian, conducted a study amongst children with ADHD on how omega-3 affects learning and behavior. She elaborates on nutrition and brain function, learning behavior and mental health, behavioral food reactions, and the connection between the gut and the brain. This wonderful article provides easily comprehendible information on the topic I am researching, and it supports my thesis on how the food we eat today affects our mental and physical health. 4. Lunsford, Ruszkiewicz. How do your eating habits differ from your grandparents? Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2019 Very detailed information on how the food we consume has changed in the last hundred years. That is a good example of how fast the food we eat is changing and most importantly how much and in what way. I wanted to use the date provided by the United States Department of Agriculture to discuss the changes in our eating habits which directly affects our well- being. 5. Selhub, Eva., “Nutritional Psychiatry: your brain on food”, Harvard Medical School, November 2015, https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/nutritional-psychiatry-your-brain-on-food-201511168626 This Harvard Medical School article is concentrated on how our brain and bodies get affected by the different nutrients we provide to our bodies through dietary intake. It discusses how the foods we consume have a direct connection to our thoughts, emotions and feelings. This article is rich in information about the physiological processes that occur in our bodies when consuming different foods. The insights provided in it will aid me in conducting a better presented research and a more comprehendible information for the audience I am hoping to reach.

Introduction
It is fascinating to obser
ve the world from the perspective of variable food practices that dynamic cultures present. From western to eastern countries food practices and consumption vary greatly and this variation depends upon number of factors, which can be environmental, economic, taste, availability of food and much more. However, there is a saying that suggests what we eat defines who we are. This is a very broad concept as it can be explained by taking into consideration variable aspects.
First can be the cultural aspect since, different cultures have different eating habits while second can be the health aspect, which suggests that eating healthy or unhealthy defines who you are. Further, more than health aspect this article will focus towards how food habits defines an individual. Using anthropological aspects and approaches major focus would be towards how food habits can lead to dynamic behaviors and identities.
Global food and eating trends
Being a biological necessity food is the basic requirement of every individual present on this planet since, every living organism required food for their functioning. However, this food can be plant based or animal based. This categorization of food habits and the type of food consumption vary greatly depending on the availability and feasibility of food. As mentioned by Blatt, food production is different in every country. Therefore, based on the type of food countries and individuals can be categorized as vegetarian that is who consume plant based products only and non-vegetarian that is who also consume animal based products along with plant based products.
Further, developing countries and transition countries reflects ore dependence on plant based food products instead of animal based food products while on the other hand industrialized countries presents that out of total population, around 30% depends upon animal based food products while rest still depends upon the plant based food products (FAO). Moreover, food habits also vary among different age group and this can be exemplified with the fact that children require less food than adults do because their requirement is less. However, due to their growing age they need diverse variety of food so as to complete the growing needs when compared to adults. Food and eating habits also vary among different cultures and different areas.
Some food and the time of eating the food is specific to the culture and therefore, food can be defined as a cultural identity for them. Further, cultures and religion such as Muslims prefer non-vegetarian food to vegetarian food and within non-vegetarian food, they prefer ‘Halal’ meat because it is related to their culture and therefore is an indicative of their religion. Moreover, western countries such as U.S.A and Europe had shown more dependence towards animal-based products along with dairy and plant based products.
Eating habits and human identity
Food is meant to taste good but along with that it is also a major source towards full filling the energy requirement of body. However, as argued by Hoerr, eating habits are the major indicators towards good and bad food or health and unhealthy food. Eating is a very simple activity but depends upon number of factors. These factors again may be related to availability, affordability, cultural, social, family, psychological and much more. However, there is a direct correlation between individual’s eating patterns and their behavior that is eating effects the behavior of individual. Major influencers towards eating and human behavior respectively are—
Family –
Humans are one of the organisms who prefer to reside in colonies and as they have evolved these colonies have turned into family. Eating habits greatly vary according to the family since, when a child is born he or she is...
