Use two appropriate secondary sources to research the women in early Chinese civilization (5000-481 BCE) during the Xia, Shang and/or Zhou dynasties, and Shijing (Book of Songs). Again, one of these can be the textbook. The second should come from thelibrary's databases.
1. It often seems as if women had somewhat greater freedom among the earliest civilizations we have encountered then they would in the period after 600 BCE. Do you think this is a fair observation? If so, which of these societies seemed to offer the most agency to women?
2. Why did China become increasingly patriarchal over time? Does the development of urban-agrarian society necessarily lead to patriarchy?
