The table below presents the scores of 10 randomly selected cities on each of six variables: three measures of criminal activity and three measures of population structure. Crime rates are the number of incidents per 100,000 population. For each combination of crime rate and population characteristic:

a. Draw a scattergram and a freehand regression line.

b. Compute the slope (b) and find the Y intercept (a).

c. State the least-squares regression line. What homicide rate would you predict for a city with a growth rate of 21? What robbery rate would you predict for a city with a population density of 250? What auto theft rate would you predict for a city in which 50% of the population lived in the urban core?

d. Compute r and r2.

e. Since these cities come from a random sample, conduct a test of significance for both relationships.

f. Describe the strength and direction of each of these relationships in a sentence or two.
